ToteTuesday Fundraiser

Tote TuesdayI am very happy to be a participating in a very important event beginning February 2, 2010. Virginia Spiegel is launching ToteTuesday, her newest effort to raise money for the American Cancer Society, and the event will run through the end of March. To date Virginia has raised over $190,000.00 from fundraisers involving the fiber arts and all of the money raised from this Fiberart For A Cause fundraiser goes directly to ACS.

ToteTuesday is not just any fundraiser. It’s also a showcase for everything that is fun and creative about the fiber arts. Themed totes are filled with unique, beautiful, and inspiring items from the worlds of fiber arts, knitting, art quilting, mixed media and surface design then auctioned off to the highest bidder. You can expect to see totes offering original artwork, autographed books, hand-dyed fabrics, gorgeous yarns, handmade journals, fun and useful materials/tools for mixed-media and surface design, and much, much more.

My book, Fabric Art Collage, 40+ Mixed Media Techniques, will be included in the Tote named Fabric Art Collage.  Also included in the Tote will be fabrics, dyes, fibers and many more cool items donated by Peggy Schroder. A list of more than twenty themed totes and their contents can be found here.

I hope you all will stop by the event, bid on and buy cool stuff, and create beautiful things. Check out Virginia Spiegel’s blog for more information.

Embossed Quilt Batting Project and Weekly Giveaway

Anyone that knows me can tell you how much I love all things vintage. I frequent flea markets and antique stores looking for old laces, fabrics, and trims. While writing my book Fabric Art Collage, I was able to use some of my favorite finds in really unique ways.

embossed-journal-fullOne of my techniques involves using lace or doilies to create embossed quilt batting. Yes, quilt batting! The batting I use is Fairfield’s Nature-Fil Bamboo Batting. It is so soft, embosses well, and also takes dye very nicely. For those of you who have my book, you can see that I love layers and embellishments.

One of my favorite embellishment companies is Vintaj Natural Brass Co. They have a beautiful selection of filigree and findings. For the following project I combined embossed batting and Vintaj findings to decorate a simple composition book.

Fabric Art Collage Project and Creative Textile Tool Giveaway

26032501creativetextiletool.1Being a mixed media artist, I am always looking for ways to add texture and dimension to my work.  While writing Fabric Art Collage I experimented with many techniques and materials.  One of those experiments resulted in hot stamping painted fast2fuse with the Creative Textile Tool by Walnut Hollow.

The Creative Textile Tool has many attributes.  I like that you can hot stamp designs, use it to cut synthetics (such as Lutradur), etch and emboss onto fabrics such as velvet, cut stencils, and transfer laser images.  I continue to find new ways to use it in my work. And I have a great opportunity for one lucky reader to do the same! Leave a comment below briefly describing a project you’d be inspired to make with the Creative Textile Tool by 9am PST on Monday 10/12/09, and  you could be the one lucky commenter chosen at random to receive their very own Creative Textile Tool from Walnut Hollow!  Good luck!

The project below incorporates the Creative Textile Tool and many of my favorite techniques.  Check out Fabric Art Collage for more ways to use hot tools. Continue Reading…

Rebekah Meier Teaching Online at Joggles.com

Fabric Art Collage blog 4-10-09In my book, Fabric Art Collage, 40+ Mixed Media Techniques, I spent a lot of time experimenting and thinking of new and unique ways to use common art, craft, and quilt supplies that we all have in our creative stash.  I like to describe the book as a fusion of where my art/craft and quilting backgrounds come together to create mixed media.

After completing a book, the best part is being able to teach the techniques and make new projects.  Next month I will be teaching an online class using techniques from my book at Joggles.com, a great website where you can find all kinds of cool mixed media products and classes.  Each week students will learn unique mixed media  techniques  such as creating and custom designing their own materials and fabric  (with fast2fuse and fusible web) to create layers, which upon completion, will result in a finished fabric art canvas piece.

The class starts October 22; I hope you will join me for some creative fun! ~Rebekah~

CHA and Canvas Books!

At the recent CHA show in California, I had the best time hosting a Make-and-Take using techniques from my new book Fabric Art Collage 40+ Mixed Media Techniques which will be released in May. The Make-and-Takes were well received, and everyone had lots of fun creating! Thank you to everyone that stopped by and gave me their best wishes. The Canvas Books  are so versatile. My favorite way to design them is to create layers, using the many different techniques and mediums from my book,  as shown here.
