Yvonne Porcella: Bold Strokes

I was recently at the opening of Yvonne Porcella: Bold Strokes, a new exhibit at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, representing C&T (an exhibit co-sponsor) and as a Board Member of the Museum (I just joined the Board in October).

The exhibit is spectacular! It shows 25 years of Yvonne’s work, including works that haven’t been seen before in public. Yvonne was there for the opening celebration and it was great to see her. In a talk, she (Continue Reading...)

Liz Aneloski, C&T Developmental Editor and all-around creative person made these for all of us. They have a peanut butter center, dipped in chocolate, then decorated. Yum, yum, yum!

She was inspired by this article on Bakerella.com.

I Love the Carol Doak Keepsake Frame Cards

Carol Doak

I love, love, love the new Carol Doak Keepsake Frame Cards, I’ve been waiting impatiently for them ever since I heard that we were going to be publishing them.

I really enjoy making my own cards–these make it so easy, and they look so great. The hand-made paper they are made from feels substantial and deluxe. You can stitch through them, and drawn on them. When I get a chance, I’m going to play with painting the whole card. You’ve got to (Continue Reading...)

Road Trip to PIQF

We love going to Pacific International Quilt Festival (PIQF) in Santa Clara. It’s a bit of a drive, but close enough to visit in a day. We know we didn’t see everyone and everything, but here’s a taste of what we did see.

First up was Wendy Hill and the fabulous Color Cascade Special Exhibit. Wendy and her quilt group made quilts using the 3-in-1 Color Tool. Wendy explained it in a previous post, and it was great to see it (Continue Reading...)

Lura Schwarz Smith & Kerby Smith Quilts on Exhibit

We love it when our authors have their quilts on exhibit, and October is a fabulous month to see the work of Lura Schwarz Smith & Kerby Smith, authors of Secrets of Digital Quilting: From Camera to Quilt.

Lura and Kerby have a special exhibit featuring digital fabric in their quilts at Pacific International Quilt Festival, October 14-17th at Santa Clara, CA. They will be at (Continue Reading...)

Quilts for the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative

I finally sent in four quilts for the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI) that I’ve blogged about in previous posts.

The 9″ x 12″ or less size is perfect for experimenting and trying out new techniques. Three of the four quilts I sent in were things that I was trying out using acrylic paints and inks from our Liquitex® Surface Design Center. On the Edge uses palette knife techniques (way fun). Golden Sun uses stenciling and stamping. And Wild (Continue Reading...)

My Monet Clock

Just when I think I’m done making clocks, another one pops to mind. This one was inspired by my experiments with applying acrylic paint from our Liquitex® Surface Design Center with a palette knife. Below are directions for how to make one like it. For more clock-making ideas check out Fast, Fun & Easy® Creative Fabric Clocks.

Monet Clock

1. Start with an 8” diameter circle of fast2fuse®. Iron white fabric to both sides, and trim to the size of the fast2fuse.

2. Paint the (Continue Reading...)

Jan Krentz in Town

Jan Krentz was in town at the end of August to teach from her wonderful new book Quick Diamond Quilts & Beyond. I wasn’t able to take the class (sponsored by my guild), but I did stop by on the first day to say Hi and to take some pictures to share.

Jan’s book walks you through all the steps to create an amazing variety of quilts made from diamond shapes (with no inset seams!). Everyone in class was having a (Continue Reading...)

In Appreciation of Bonnie Leman

I never had the opportunity to meet Bonnie Leman. By the time I came to quilting, Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine was in the able hands of her daughter Mary Leman Austin. After I started working at C&T Publishing, I began to hear some of the stories about how Bonnie and her husband started the magazine.

I really came to understand what Bonnie had accomplished when I was working with Mary on a book to celebrate the magazine’s 35th anniversary. In the book, (Continue Reading...)
