Turning Failures into Design Oppportunities

If you’ve read any of my blog posts, you know that I love playing with paint and other mixed media products. A few weeks ago, I thought it would be fun to try embossing batting with lace—I’d read about the technique in Rebekah Meier’s book Fabric Art Collage—40+ Mixed Media Techniques. It turned out that I didn’t have any lace that I thought would work, but I did have some latch-hook rug canvas and thought that the grid would make a good (Continue Reading...)

Putting Your UFOs to Work

Those of you who don’t have any UFOs can stop reading now.

You’re all still here, aren’t you?

Who doesn’t have UFOs? Mine are mostly small projects that were started in workshops that I’ve taken. The quilts are small, maybe 18″ x 18″ or so. Some are quilted, some partially quilted, some not quilted at all. I was going to cut them up to make quilts for the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI), I could get 2 quilts from each one, (Continue Reading...)

C&T Group Quilt, Continued

We have the slices done. The next tasks were to sew them together, add the border (which we made using a tone-on-tone brown fabric and gold, black & brown Paintstiks and rubbing plates), and get it to the quilter.

Raffle tickets for the quilt are available at the NAMTA Foundation website. Buy them before April 15th!

C&T Group Quilt – Update

A few weeks ago, I blogged about the group quilt that some of the editors are making for the NAMTA (National Art Materials Trade Association) Foundation. We’re all using different approaches and techniques for our slices. I’m primarily using Liquitex® acrylic paint from our Surface Design Center to create the elements in my slice.

Using the full-size drawing, I traced each shape that I needed to paint onto paper-backed fusible web. To reduce the stiffness, I cut away the inside of each shape so there (Continue Reading...)

C&T Group Quilt

The editors have an exciting new quiltmaking project!

Mary Wruck, C&T’s Business Development Manager, is on the board of the NAMTA (National Art Materials Trade Association) Foundation.  They are doing a fund-raising auction, and Mary asked us if we could make a quilt. After a fair amount of dicussion, we decided to do a “slice” quilt—where one image is sliced into a number of pieces. Each person does their own slice, then all the slices are put together.

Six of us volunteered, (Continue Reading...)

Yvonne Porcella: Bold Strokes

I was recently at the opening of Yvonne Porcella: Bold Strokes, a new exhibit at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, representing C&T (an exhibit co-sponsor) and as a Board Member of the Museum (I just joined the Board in October).

The exhibit is spectacular! It shows 25 years of Yvonne’s work, including works that haven’t been seen before in public. Yvonne was there for the opening celebration and it was great to see her. In a talk, she (Continue Reading...)

Gobble, Gobble

Liz Aneloski, C&T Developmental Editor and all-around creative person made these for all of us. They have a peanut butter center, dipped in chocolate, then decorated. Yum, yum, yum!

She was inspired by this article on Bakerella.com.

I Love the Carol Doak Keepsake Frame Cards

Carol Doak

I love, love, love the new Carol Doak Keepsake Frame Cards, I’ve been waiting impatiently for them ever since I heard that we were going to be publishing them.

I really enjoy making my own cards–these make it so easy, and they look so great. The hand-made paper they are made from feels substantial and deluxe. You can stitch through them, and drawn on them. When I get a chance, I’m going to play with painting the whole card. You’ve got to (Continue Reading...)
