The City Quilter Shop and Gallery

The City Quilter display

If you ever get to NYC you MUST go to the newly expanded The City Quilter. Not only have they added more space for books and fabric, they have also added a gallery dedicated exclusively to art quilts (click the pics to zoom in). Their first exhibit is Daphne Taylor.

Her work is primarily silk and the imagery is graphic and elegant.

Even though I LOVED the gallery, my heart skips a beat when I see a terrific quilt shop, and (Continue Reading...)

Finding inspiration at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Tiffany Fountain Favorite Colors

I try to go to a new museum whenever I travel (which I tend to do quite often these days) but the Met keeps calling me back. When I was in NYC for the Book Expo in late May I spent a few hours immersing myself in several of the exhibits. It is massive and although I may have gotten lost three times, I found many beautiful pieces that inspired me.

I love the door because the wood carving (Continue Reading...)

Spring Quilt Market in Salt Lake City – The Tulips!

Pink Tulips

We had a great time in SLC at the Spring 2011 Quilt Market Trade Show. The weather was perfect and the show itself was tremendous. But the most amazing sight were the tulips at the Mormon Temple.

I would guesstimate over one hundred thousand tulips and other flowers including pansies, mums, poppies and many more. On Thursday morning I walked with Becky Goldsmith from Piece ‘O Cake Designs and we stumbled upon the block where there were flowers in abundance lining the (Continue Reading...)

Celebrating a decade of Shirley

What does it mean to work 10 years at one company? Do many people do that anymore? We just celebrated Shirley Montano’s 10 year Anniversary and it was great fun. For 10-year anniversaries, we have a celebratory luncheon and a special dessert of the feted person’s choice and we all take advantage of the opportunity to recall our memories and tell stories.

What I remember about Shirley is her indomitable spirit, her great sense of fun and her ability to sell (Continue Reading...)

Just Curious

A few weeks ago I went to a conference in NY and had the opportunity to visit an artist/ author that I had met the year before at the annual Book Expo. Margaret Peot is such a talented artist, she has a newly released book for kids about making art with ink blots, called appropriately, Inkblot, Drip, Splash and Squish Your Way to Creativity. It just came out and you can find it on Amazon.

She invited me to where she (Continue Reading...)

Taking a class at your local quilt shop

A few weeks ago I took a terrific class from Allie Aller on hand embroidery. The class was at New Pieces in Berkeley…this shop is great! Clean, well-lit, has tons of yummy fabrics and is nicely merchandised (this coming from me—a woman who did retail floor and window merchandising in her youth for 3 years). I always appreciate a store that maximizes its floor and display space.

I have always wanted to learn embroidery and loved the class; in four hours we learned about (Continue Reading...)

Liz Celebrates 20 Years at C&T

Recently we celebrated Liz Aneloski’s 20th year with us.  Liz was our first full-time editor and we believe our 4th or 5th employee.  Liz is both an editor and an author.  She has been instrumental to our success over the years, having been the developmental editor for many of our bestselling authors including Judith Baker Montano,  Alex Anderson and many more. In her spare time, Liz and Alex have co-authored the very successful Super Simple series and the (Continue Reading...)

Quick and easy thank-you cards

After the holidays, I like to send thank-you notes for the Christmas gifts I have received.  I am a bit old-fashioned…believing that a card in the mail is the best way to express appreciation for a thoughtful gift.  Since I am a motivated crafter, I wanted to make my own cards. I used a pack of Carol Doak’s Keepsake Frame Cards for the first time and they are beautiful.  The cards and envelopes feel glorious because they (Continue Reading...)

Succulent Christmas Centerpiece

I am a collector of many things. Bottles, craft supplies, fabric, books both old and new, and for the last few years, succulent plants. It all started with the succulents when my sister, Antoinette, gave me one, and my mom gave me another.  Then my mom and I toured the Ruth Bancroft Gardens in Walnut Creek and I was hooked.

Now I have about 20 potted succulents and many more in the ground. I love the different colors and all the (Continue Reading...)

My Oldest Sister’s Quilt

One of my resolutions for the new year is to finish some very important quilts. So far, I have made quilts for my boys (two each), my husband, my best friend, and another good friend. But I have not yet gotten around to making a quilt for each of my 4 siblings.

With my new sense of purpose, I started with my oldest sister Antoinette (if you ask her, she will say she is also my favorite sister, but anyone who (Continue Reading...)
