Today’s new release post is written by none other than Becky Goldsmith herself!
”Linda and I both have been told by scores of quilters that they learned how to applique from our Applique Sampler books. We are so happy when we hear that! But even though the last book was wonderful, we did learn a variety of new things since it was written. Our new book really is the Best-Ever Applique Sampler!
This book is mostly filled with detailed written instructions and close-up how-to photos. We wanted the projects to be small so that they could be finished more quickly. All the blocks are the same 14” x 14” size so that they can be mixed and matched. Linda plans to hang her nine small quilts together on three bamboo poles.
I was more interested in making projects from multiple blocks. I am especially fond of the Blowin’ In The Wind quilt. Maybe that’s because I used one of my favorite (and expensive!) Japanese fabrics from my stash in the background. (Editor’s note: You are not the only one who loves this quilt!)
You may not know it, but when you look at the photos in the book, those are my hands! In the weeks before the photo shoot, I took good care of them – using lots of lotion.
During the 4-day photo shoot, I sat amidst many lights with my hands over a table. I would position the fabric just so in my hands, and then freeze. Then I’d lean my head and body out of the way so that Diane Pederson could lean over me and take the photo.
Once the photo was taken, Diane would bring it up on screen to be sure it was perfect. It was at that point that we cropped the image.
These are closer crops than you often see in a book. From a purely design aspect, a longer shot is often prettier – but a closer crop allows you to really see what was going on.
I hope you enjoy reading this book and making the quilts!
I love the way Becky writes and it is always so fun to get little ‘insider peeks’ at how things come together around here!
