This week’s giveaway—it’s all about free-form!

Gillman Dwellings

"Dwellings" by Rayna Gillman

Yay!! Can you see me doing a little happy dance over here? Rayna Gillman’s new book, Create Your Own Free-Form Quilts, is my latest obsession. I think the book’s subtitle says it all…A Stress-Free Journey to Original Design. Two things that really float my own creative boat are “stress-free” and “original design.” One of Rayna’s personal tenets of design is also my own artistic mantra…there’s no such thing as a mistake!

Gillman book coverThis book shows you how to use free-form cutting and piecing techniques to bring some spontaneity to your quiltmaking using commercial fabrics, hand-dyes, hand-prints, leftover stashy bits, or even those not-so-pretty blocks you made oh-so-long-ago that have been sitting in a drawer for who-knows-how-long.

Rayna’s improvisational approach removes the fretting over straight edges or matching seams; she really knows how to transform the wonky into the beautiful! I think every single picture in this book is pure eye candy…from the inspiring finished quilts that Rayna and her students have made right down to the how-to shots of unusual combinations of fabric strips. She also proves that you really can make the most out of fabrics you’re not so fond of.

By sewing bits and pieces of different fabrics together into units with larger elements, before you know it, your imagination will spark and evolve and voilà…you create a truly original quilt!

As with my previous book, Create Your Own Hand-Printed Cloth, this is a process book that will take you on a journey where you can play, experiment, and make some detours along the way. The destination will be a surprise, but you’ll know when you have arrived.  —Rayna Gillman

Free quilt project – Pinwheel

"Pinwheel" by Emily Cier

"Pinwheel" by Emily Cier

Pinwheel by Emily Cier, seemed befitting as a free project this season. The flow and movement purvey a strong resemblance to falling leaves as they swirl and twirl in their autumnal dance.  These instructions from Emily’s book, Quilt Remix, provide for various sizes, but wouldn’t a lap quilt be perfect for cuddling up during a chilly afternoon?

Click here to download the free project instructions – enjoy!

C&T authors win big at the IQA Awards at Quilt Festival

Refracted Lily quilt

"Refracted Lily" by Gloria Hansen

Earlier tonight I attended the International Quilt Association Awards at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas. In this annual show, Quilts—A World of Beauty, there were so many gorgeous, perfectly-crafted quilts, and we were lucky enough to be there to see some of our authors win this year’s awards.  And a few C&T’ers won more than once!

Anna Faustino, author of Simply Stunning Woven Quilts, won two awards; the first was third place in the Art – Abstract, Small category for her quilt, Funky Reef. The second was third place in the Innovative Appliqué category for her quilt, Empire State.

Another winner was in C&T’s own Digital Imagery category, with the first place award going to Gloria Hansen for her Refracted Lily quilt (above).

Susan Brubaker-Knapp, author of Point, Click, Quilt!, won the third place award for her quilt, Maximum Cat Nap in the Art – Miniature category.

Debby Kemball, author of Beautiful Botanicals, came in second in the with her Euphoria quilt in the Traditional Appliqué category.

David Taylor won two awards in the same category, Art – Pictorial; he won third for Marmalade’s First Snow and first place for Maynard. David’s work is featured in one of our postcard sets, The Art of Quilts Postcard Collection—Animals.

And the really exciting news is Kathy Wylie, author of Sewflakes…she won The Founders Award worth $7,500 for her amazing appliqué quilt, Flourish on the Vine.

You can see all the award-winning quilts on the IQA’s website.

Please join me in congratulating all of our C&T winners!
