50 Little Paper-Pieced Blocks—and a giveaway!

Doak PP Blocks

Carol Doak has put together the perfect tools to bring quilters and cardmakers together…her new book, 50 Little Paper-Pieced Blocksis filled with adorable, perfectly-pieced 3″ quilt blocks in a variety of themes including stars, hearts, flowers, a birthday cake…even crayons, an airplane, and a candlestick!

Doak book coverThis book is also a great intro to paper piecing for those of us (ok so maybe it’s just me) who have been a little afraid to try.

Once you’ve made all your favorite designs from the book, you can tuck them into Carol Doak’s Keepsake Frame Cards and mail them off to friends and family. The card stock is handmade and really lovely…definitely works as a mini art frame too, to display the blocks that you want to keep for yourself. If you’re not into cardmaking, you can mix and match the blocks to make table linens, wall quilts, pillows, or just about any cute fabric accessory.

Click here for a few FREE block patterns from the book, just to whet your paper-piecing appetite.

The nicest greeting card I got was in my dreams for Valentines Day this year from my Sweet Mother who passed away last year!!! It was signed by her in her handwriting….when I asked the man who gave it to me how he got it….he told me he had strict instructions to make sure I got it this year!!! I cried in my sleep and was crying when I woke up too!!! I will never forget that dream…..

It would have to be the birthday card from my daughter and son-in-law who live in Taiwan telling me how much they wished I had a wonderful birthday and they were thinking of me on my day even though they could not be with me.

The best card is the one your not expecting, when it says HELLO, I was just thinking of you. That reminds me, I need to find my box of cards, it is time to send some out to my unsuspecting friends.

The nicest card I ever received was from my son when he was about 5yrs old. It was the first card he made for me totally all by himself and it was beautiful… and it totally expressed his love for me, which is what cards should be – handmade and from the heart.

My best card was for my birthday this year I received a card in the mail from my bestfriends mom and when I went over to his house I took it to show him how pretty it was and before I could give it to him he handed me a card from him. When I opened the card I just started laughing it was the same card that his mom had sent me from Ohio I was just so proud because they both thought of me as such a special person that even 1300 miles apart the sentiments were the same. Oh and the cards were purple, I am a purple freak!

The best card I ever got was a dirty paper plate my brother sent me to remind me I was missed at Thanksgiving Dinner!! Really!! I was living in TN and all my family was in OH. It was my first Thanksgiving away from home. He nicley folded the paper plate in half, addressed it and put a stamp on it! That was when the Post Office took their delivery promises seriously!! LOL

My oldest daughter, who was a handful as a teenager, gave me a mother’s day card that said “Mom, I realize it wasn’t easy raising me…The best and the brightest are always a challenge!” and she glued a picture of herself – wearing a shirt that says “I heart me” – over the cartoon girl on the front of the card. I have the card still many years later. A very special card.

Thanks for the opportunity to win this fabulous book. A great way to get projects precise. My favourite card was one my Sister gave me for Christmas one year. She made it out of bits from other cards and some red ribbon. Far to nice to throw away. It is on the bookcase in my sewing room.

Funny you should ask, the nicest card I received was in the mail yesterday. I was at hancock fabrics and asked a woman where she got a specfic pattern. She said she made it and said she would be willing to send me a copy of it. I gave her my address and said thanks and not a thought came to mind. We began talking and I found out they were on their way to the thrift shop to purchase extra winter coats for her daughter’s class (kindergarden teacher). Without a thought I handed the daughter/teacher $20.00 and asked her to buy some extra for the kids. The thank you note with the patterns said that her daughter (the teacher) was overwhelmed by my generosity. I thought no more about it, just a simple act of kindness. Can’t have kids go without winter coats even in the Carolinas, it still gets cold.

He is not into the sentimental things very much and that year he went all out plus the card and it was the sweetest one I have ever received in my books. The nicest greeting card I ever got was from my husband when we had been fighting over silly things. While I was at school, he decorated the entire living room to say he was sorry & Happy Birthday and taped the greeting card on the door so I’d see it before entering.

That was 20 years ago & is still as fresh in my mind as though it were yesterday.

The nicest greeting card I ever received came just a few months ago after going on a “quilting cruise” to Alaska with my sister-in-law. She hadn’t originally been thrilled about the idea, but I think she knew I wanted to do it soooo bad, so she agreed to go with me. Her “thank you” card came a couple of weeks after we got home, and it talked about how wonderful a time she had and how it renewed her interest/excitement in life ~ her husband died tragically almost 6 years ago. Of course there was intense emotion for me, and I will never forget the card…

The best I’ve ever received was from the team at my chemical plant, the day I got my release from the oncologist. It was just a little piece of copy paper with a dot matrix graphic on it, but they had folded it in fours and everyone on all three shifts had put their names in congratulating me on surviving 40 weeks of chemotherapy, all the surgery and radiation while I managed to stay on the job. Lovely! I still have it, more than 20 years later.

As a single parent raising a son and daughter was not easy but very rewarding. My favorite card came to me on Fathers Day from them. It was a handmade cards with bits and pieces of an array of color paper they had found and saved. They tried to make it as cheerful as they could with X’s and O’s scattered throughout. In side they had printed “You are the BEST Mom and Dad we could want.” I cherished that card for many years until it was destroyed by water. What made it even more touching was that I had lost my own father that Christmas.

When my daughter was about 3-1/2 she “colored” a birthday cake in one of her coloring books, tore it out, put it in an old utility bill envelope and presented it to me on my birthday. Best card EVER! :o)

I love the designs and would like an opportunity to win the book–that is exactly what I need is paper piecing blocks. For some reason when I do it the regular way I can never get a square block–something is always off.

This book will be a great, non intimidating way to make an inticate project.
Big or small. Still enough pieces to keep amy more experienced paper Piecers interested too. A great companion for the “300 paper-pieced Quilt Blocks” book to make a combination of sizes in the one project i think.
    great job Carol

My friend Sue sent me a card thanking me for all the I do for the guild. It was made using techniques from the book Stitch Alchemy, which shows techniques for making a kind of fabric paper. Not only did she send me the thank you note card, but she sent me a selection of cards to use myself! It was such a nice and unexpected surprise.

The nicest greeting card I ever received was the one I got for Valentines Day, 1967. I met my future husband in Ashland, Wisconsin on a bitter cold night……a typical college Wednesday night at the local gathering place (Cabby’s Tap). My future husband gave me a card that said “Won’t you be my hunny bunny”…….we still talk about it today. Therefore, it was a great greeting card.

The nicest card I got was from a foster child who sent me on every year for Mother’s Day. It was his way of keeping in touch. One year I did not get one :( I was contacted a few weeks later to find he was now tetraplegic from a car accident. He passed away two years ago

I already have the notecards and most of Carol’s others books. It would be great to have a book with block specially designed for the notecards and still perfect for mini-quilts.

I aint skeered of paper piecing. But doing it solely for 5 years now. All thanks to Carol Doak.

The best greeting card i ever received was the first Mother’s Day after my son died (at 17)). His best friend sent me the card, and he said he had been thinking of me, and “this is the card Brady would have bought you.” Needless to say, I cried and cried. It was so thoughtful of him.

The best card I ever received was one that was handmade by a coworker letting us know her support while our child was dealing with chemo. She was very talented in calligraphy, and drawing. I am not! Quilting and sewing are the way I share with others.

My favorite greeting card was actually a mother’s day card the first mother’s day after my daughter got married. My new son-in-law also signed the card thanking me for raising my daughter to be such a wonderful woman! Made me cry!!
