Mickey Lawler’s SkyQuilts…with a giveaway!

Beach Houses 3

"Beach Houses 3"

The sky has a magic about it. Do you remember lying on your back on the cool grass, watching summer clouds drifting along in slow motion and feeling yourself lifted up as if you had become part of the vast sky above? Wherever we are on this planet, the sky surrounds, inspires, sometimes awes, and often gentles us.   —Mickey Lawler

Skyquilts coverAuthor Mickey Lawler has an incredible ability to embrace and transfer the immense beauty of skies onto fabric.

In her newly-released book, Mickey Lawler’s SkyQuilts, she teaches 12 different fabric painting techniques so you can create a stunning stash of painted landscapes, water scenes and dreamy skies.

She’ll show you how to paint foregrounds and focal points that make your final work exciting. Her techniques are clearly explained with step-by-step photos and her “design strip” method carries the painted cloth (with few dreaded cuts) into striking quilts.

It’s all about the brilliant sunsets and sky in Monterey, CA. where visitors and locals have the opportunity to view a magnificent nuclear fusion of fire and light, slowly melting down into the Pacific Ocean. It’s the perfect marriage of sky and sea with vivid and vibrant colors of yellow, orange, red, blue, purple, violet and fusia all ribboned together in constantly changing patterns. What a breathtaking spectacular view! My next quilt will incorporate this scene in the design!

I love to look at the sky when it changes. When I lived in New Zealand, the sky changed every 5-10 minutes. It reminded me of how life is full of changes, and you would do well to embrace the change (or always carry an umbrella).

I love sunsets and watching the sky change through a whole myriad of colours as the sun sinks down in the sky, especially when there are interesting clouds to enhance the scene. One of the most beautiful ones we saw recently was in New Zealand and I took an amazing photo of it – would make a great skydye quilt!

  30. Posted October 24, 2011 at 3:41 pm | Permalink

My favorite time to look at the sky is during that eerie light the comes just after one of those strange storms. The sky becomes a startling pinkish yellow and seems to glow around objects like houses that it lights from behind. On one such afternoon when the sky had this very strange light, I took a photograph of my neighbor’s house and it was accepted in Karey Bresenhen’s 1st photo exhibit of art quilters photos.

finish building a new pedestrian bridge over the East Side

The best sky for me is the rosy sunset – closer to the sun the brilliant yellows and oranges and ambers, while further away, rose, purple, and even blue as it starts to go dark. I like the sky during sunsets. It has countless hues of red, purple, blue, and orange. Very inspiring for a sky quilt.

I love to watch the sky on a warm spring day when there are large white fluffy clouds with just enough grey for definition. I’ll watch and try to find different shapes, animals etc.

I’ve made a couple quilts with a sky and they look NOTHING like this. I’m a beginner but I’m eager to learn. Thanks to my cell phone I take pics of skies all the time— This book will help me to bring them to life. I love learning this amazing craft!!!

The moments just before the sun comes up in the desert is my favorite time to watch the day come to life. Especially now that it is cooler :)

I love sunsets. I collected pictures of them as a child. I use them in my quilts. I also like unique clouds. I have one SkyDyes book and would love to have this one too. Thanks for the opportunity.
