Part of my fabric stash
My friend Patty had recently sorted, folded and stacked most of my fabric, and I was able to see what a lot of rich, jewel-toned yardage I have. So I was looking for a project that would use some of my large stash of colors, in a somewhat monochromatic theme.
I found more than one gorgeous quilt to make in our new book, Colorful Quilts for Fabric Lovers by Amy Walsh and Janine Burke.
This book showcases ten new colorful quilt projects that are perfect for my collected blues, or maybe red pieces, or perhaps a wild mash-up of all those batiks stacked on the upper shelves. Your chance to win a copy is at the end of this post.
Amy and Janine even show how you can use strips of the fabrics you have, or get a new fat quarter assortment to piece your top, as in this quilt called Too Flat. Click the quilt images to zoom in.
I especially love how each quilt project is followed by alternate colorways and sizes, a feature that makes it easy for those of us who are math-challenged. The yardages are given for all those sizes, so it is so easy!Amy and Janine’s business, Blue Underground Studios, has been offering innovative patterns since 2005, and in this book they’ve shared how to make stunning quilts which look more complex than they really are, with easy piecing and colorful fabric doing all the work. Squares, rectangles, strips……all the ‘cuts’ we use in quiltmaking, with tips on every page.
Amy and Janine obviously LOVE fabric and give hints on buying strategies. They feature batiks, solids, small prints, solids and very large prints. And they piece their quilt backs, as do I, which gives vibrant character to both sides of the quilt.
One quilt I’ll be making, Crossroads, has a tip about using ”more than 40 different fabrics…to get the look and texture you want…the more fabrics, the better” I think I’ll do that one with my greens.
Union Station will be eye-popping with my variety of reds, combined with a subtle grey on black dotted, that ‘reads’ as a solid cavern-grey.
This is a book you should have because you’ll be able to make some exciting quilts right from your stash…and then head to your local quilt shop to replenish with some of the gorgeous new fabric lines that will be arriving soon…sounds like a plan to me!
One lucky person will win their very own copy of Colorful Quilts for Fabric Lovers. To enter, leave a comment at the end of this post telling us your favorite colors to work with.

Bright, jewel colors on a dark background. But mostly – lots and lots of saturated color.
Lately my favorites are brown & green or red & aqua. :)

Your stach is so very organized. I hope to get there one of these days. The book looks like fun.
I have to pick just one color??? Oh, OK, after looking at several quilts I’ve made I realize that yellow – from pale just-on-the-far-edge-of-cream to deep cheddar – is my favorite color. And it really does go with everything.
I love Blues and Browns all shades. Its very hard to pick a favorite though:)
It looks like a great book! I’ve been a fan of Blue Underground’s patterns for a while now.
My favorite colors to work with are blues, teals and greens, so soothing. The book looks wonderful, thank you.
My favourite colours would be orange and hot pink..or………lime green and turquoise.
My favorite colors are teals, orange’s, and green’s…a beautiful color combination.
Right now I am loving the bright colors.
definitely limes, grays, oranges!
gray with anything..
My currents favorites are brights, but I’m a little biased right now as I have been making a bunch of children’s quilts.
green, blue, purple, red, orange, yellow….and anything hand dyed or marbled…. I’m not a colour snob at all…..and I have a blog badge on my blog. thanks for the chance to win the book.
My favorite range of color is Blue. This book looks awesome:)
I have always loved cobalt blue and very dark greens, but lately I find that I like these in combination with deep purple and teal, especially against black. My second choice would be a variety of reds (maybe some kind of play on lipstick in the design).

My favorite colors change with the seasons – jewel tones in January, pastels in the spring, clear colors in the summer, earth tones in the fall. Laughing, if I don’t finish a project by the end of the season, it goes into my UFO pile because I don’t like to work ‘out of season’.
I kind of have colors of the moment- could be oranges and reds, greens and blues, etc. I don’t think I have a favorite.
I’m on your mailing list.
It’s always red, red, red. But i put a touch of green in everything.
I love to work with blues. Thanks for the chance to win.
I love working with blues and yellows :-)
I’m already an email recipient!
I love the rich colors in these quilts- thanks for the opportunity to win such a nice book.

99.9% of the time whatever I do has to have purple in it in some shade. I am obsessed with brights and pastels and have a real problem getting out of my comfort zone with neutral and darks.
It used to be, I didn’t like to use yellow or orange in my painting or quilts. then I made a bright baby quilt and now I use EVERYTHING. I even made a quilt in red, orange, yellow, purple and fuscia. I call it FIRE.
BUT my favorite colors to work in is blues. everything in the blue range stretching to clear turquoise and into plum.

Thank you for a great giveaway! I love to work with aqua green and fuchsia.
My favorite color combo — right now! — is aqua and orange, not a bright orange, but more of a sedate peach! Love it~
I love bright colours – red, orange, yellow, with touches of blues and greens.
I love warm colors, specialy green
I am a lover of all things blue, but all colors speak to me at times. The brighter and bolder, the better.
I love browns and greens, but if it’s batik, I love them all!
I love to work with red & green as a favorite color. And then next week it might be yellow & purple as my favorite color. And then again I’m being swung over by the “Modern” quilts with gray. I’m not sure about gray being a favorite color, but I sure like it in these “modern” quilts.
At this point, lime green and purple are big on my list of favorite colors to work with.
thanks!
I love bright colors next to black prints.
My favorite colors to work with varies from day to day. Today, I pick purple. The purple on the cover and the first quilt you showed are really capturing my attention.
