Giveaway—Colorful Quilts for Fabric Lovers

fabric stash

Part of my fabric stash

My friend Patty had recently sorted, folded and stacked most of my fabric, and I was able to see what a lot of rich, jewel-toned yardage I have. So I was looking for a project that would use some of my large stash of colors, in a somewhat monochromatic theme.

10805coverI found more than one gorgeous quilt to make in our new book, Colorful Quilts for Fabric Lovers by Amy Walsh and Janine Burke.

This book showcases ten new colorful quilt projects that are perfect for my collected blues, or maybe red pieces, or perhaps a wild mash-up of all those batiks stacked on the upper shelves. Your chance to win a copy is at the end of this post.

Amy and Janine even show how you can use strips of the fabrics you have, or get a new fat quarter assortment to piece your top, as in this quilt called Too Flat. Click the quilt images to zoom in.

"Too Flat" by Janine Burke

I especially love how each quilt project is followed by alternate colorways and sizes, a feature that makes it easy for those of us who are math-challenged.  The yardages are given for all those sizes, so it is so easy!Amy and Janine’s business, Blue Underground Studios, has been offering innovative patterns since 2005, and in this book they’ve shared how to make stunning quilts which look more complex than they really are, with easy piecing and colorful fabric doing all the work. Squares, rectangles, strips……all the ‘cuts’ we use in quiltmaking, with tips on every page.

Amy and Janine obviously LOVE fabric and give hints on buying strategies. They feature batiks, solids, small prints, solids and very large prints. And they piece their quilt backs, as do I, which gives vibrant character to both sides of the quilt.

crossroads

"Crossroads" by Amy Walsh

One quilt I’ll be making, Crossroads, has a tip about using ”more than 40 different fabrics…to get the look and texture you want…the more fabrics, the better”  I think I’ll do that one with my greens.

unionstation

"Union Station" by Janine Burke

Union Station will be eye-popping with my variety of reds, combined with a subtle grey on black dotted, that ‘reads’ as a solid cavern-grey.

This is a book you should have because you’ll be able to make some exciting quilts right from your stash…and then head to your local quilt shop to replenish with some of the gorgeous new fabric lines that will be arriving soon…sounds like a plan to me!

One lucky person will win their very own copy of Colorful Quilts for Fabric Lovers. To enter, leave a comment at the end of this post telling us your favorite colors to work with.

Comments will be closed at 6:00 pm PST on Sunday, October 2, 2011—the winner will be contacted via email and their name will be posted here on the blog next week.

Increase your chances to win! Enter an extra comment for each of the actions you take below. Tell us what you did and thanks in advance for spreading the word!

Congrats to Linda whose name was drawn at random from the comments on last week’s post!  Linda won a copy of Fabric Painting with Cindy Walter.

Bright, jewel colors on a dark background. But mostly – lots and lots of saturated color.

I have to pick just one color??? Oh, OK, after looking at several quilts I’ve made I realize that yellow – from pale just-on-the-far-edge-of-cream to deep cheddar – is my favorite color. And it really does go with everything.

I have always loved cobalt blue and very dark greens, but lately I find that I like these in combination with deep purple and teal, especially against black. My second choice would be a variety of reds (maybe some kind of play on lipstick in the design).

My favorite colors change with the seasons – jewel tones in January, pastels in the spring, clear colors in the summer, earth tones in the fall. Laughing, if I don’t finish a project by the end of the season, it goes into my UFO pile because I don’t like to work ‘out of season’.

99.9% of the time whatever I do has to have purple in it in some shade. I am obsessed with brights and pastels and have a real problem getting out of my comfort zone with neutral and darks.

It used to be, I didn’t like to use yellow or orange in my painting or quilts. then I made a bright baby quilt and now I use EVERYTHING. I even made a quilt in red, orange, yellow, purple and fuscia. I call it FIRE.
BUT my favorite colors to work in is blues. everything in the blue range stretching to clear turquoise and into plum.
