Monday is give-away day!

scrap republicBe sure to check out this great new book from rising-star quilter, Emily Cier. It includes 8 projects using scraps in every color of the rainbow (we all have lots of those), and each project even has an alternate colorway you can make using purchased yardage if you’re just starting out and don’t have a stash; everyone has to start somewhere.

Whether you’re a “little stasher” or a “big stasher” you’ll find a project that’s just perfect. You’ll love these all-new designs.

What kind of stasher am I? The photo below shows 3 of my 6 stacks of fabric organizers. I have lots to choose from. I know quilters with a lot bigger stashes, but I only allow myself to fill my space, not overflow. Whenever I get to the overflow stage I purge to get rid of the excess; a painful but necessary task. There are so many great charity quilt groups in need of fabric, so it makes me feel good to contribute.

Every so often, we have a fabric giveaway at C&T. We put all the unused extra fabric samples we’ve received on the table in the conference room. Our receptionist announces over the intercom, “the fabric giveaway has begun in the conference room.” Stand back or get trampled! It’s such fun to pick up new treasures. It’s a great way for the newbie C&T quilters to start or grow their stashes, and others to pick up those perfect fabrics to add to their stashes.

Plumb in Scraps

"Plumb in Scraps"

I loved being Emily’s developmental editor on this book. It gave me a chance to see the new designs as they developed. She would finish a few and send me photos. “What do you think?” she would say. The master of color was at it again. Just like her first book Quilt Remix, the fabrics and colors were amazing. She just has a way with color and pattern. You won’t want to miss this one.

One lucky person will win their very own copy of Scrap Republic! To enter, leave a comment at the end of this post telling us what kind of stasher YOU are.

Comments will be closed at 6:00 pm PST on Sunday, September 4th, 2011—the winner will be contacted via email and their name will be posted here on the blog next Monday.

Increase your chances to win! Enter an extra comment for each of the actions you take below. Tell us what you did and thanks in advance for spreading the word!

Congrats to Hilary whose name was drawn at random from the comments on last week’s post! Hilary won a copy of Inspirations in Design for the Creative Quilter  by Katie Pasquini Masopust.

I like to sort my stash into particular size strips and/or squares; however, I seldom get a chance to do that so all my scraps are stuffed into a box. My stash is sorted into colors….. I can’t wait to get to work on a few scrap quilts…they are always my favorites!

I fill my stash mostly with 1/2 yard pieces of fabrics I see and like, although sometimes I know I need to make a quilt in say blues and tans and will purchase fabrics in those colors, but in differents size prints, and throw in a splash of an alternate color. My stash is mostly sorted by color, but things that were bought for a project or idea or stored together with any drawings or patterns that go with them. And then there are the SCRAP bins which keep breeding, so I would love to win this book.

I cut up my scraps into squares and bricks and use up the strings and little bits on little projects and block swaps. I find it harder to use up yardage than scraps. So I know I’d like the book.

I’m a big stasher. I collect fabric and people give me fabric and I love almost every bit of it. I did recently let some go, I know I can’t use it all, but I’m trying.

My kind of stashing would nearly be explained as an addiction!! I love fabric in all it’s color and texture and possibilities!

I confess to being a ‘large’ stash person. I have plastic tubs for each colour group, and I buy fabric I love, just because I love it. Then I think about what to do with it later on! I typically buy 1/2 metre cuts, unless I really, really, REALLY love the fabric, and think I might want it for a border fabric, and then I’ll buy more. I collect music fabrics and calla lily fabrics, in 1/3 or 1/2 metre cuts. I keep some scraps, and have to get more organized about cutting them up and storing them properly. Sometimes, I donate all my scraps to others, because I don’t know what to do with them, so I’d love a project book to start using all those scraps up myself!

As someone who makes LOTS of scrap commuity quilts, I have a rather large stash that resides in 2 tall cabinets plus a rolling Iris cart for the very small pieces (I do minis too). I have great fun working with scraps, typically making 2 1/2″ strips from them or cutting 4″, 4 1/2″, 5″ or 6″ squares. Those all seem to be the most versatile.
thanks! Looks like an interesting book.

Large stasher, for sure, but very organized. I purchase mostly 1 yd cuts and everything is neatly stored in chests of drawers and plastic tubs by color, some collections. Glad I did it when the prices were lower. With the cotton rising, I’ll be buying less. Loved Emily’s first book and looking forward to another.

I am a stasher who cannot throw anything away, so I have lots of fabric and scraps! I have a double-fold door linen closet that has boxes with most of my fabric, but also have boxes under my cutting table and in the closet in the bedroom that is my sewing room. I have them arranged by color, mainly, but have separate boxes for themes, like sewing, food, holiday.

  20. Posted August 29, 2011 at 8:59 am | Permalink

I used to be a stasher who buys fabrics whenever I see something that I liked. Nowadays I try to stash fabrics by going thorugh the existing stash and analyzing which colours are in the minority (empahsis on the word try!).

I had a huge stash for the size of the apartment I lived in before I inherited my mom’s stash, as well! She was, at least, organized. Well organized! By color and tone! I generally am attracted to large patterns and bright colors, so I’m lucky to have her stash to even out my collection!

I think I am a small stasher. My quilting friends have ceiling to floor cabinets stuff with fabrics. When I go on a bus trip or to a show I come home with a couple small bags full and they come home with huge bags full that have to go under the bus. I like to know what I am going to do before I buy, but there are times when there is something I must have.:o)

My stash is quite large since I have not only my own stash but I also have my Mom’s stash too. I’m working on some charity quilts right now to start moving some of the fabric out. I figure there is also some organization that is looking for quilts. Thanks for the chance to win this book, it looks like it has some interesting ways to use up the stash.

I am a “little” stasher. USUALLY I only buy fabric when I have a plan for it. In the past several months that I’ve been blogging, I have started to buy occasional ‘just because’ fabrics – it’s so helpful with the bees & swaps I’ve joined. I do really get a kick out of using fabric from my stash, though, and I would love a copy of Emily’s book!

Ahhhh, love my stash! I store fabric in separate bins by designer. Smaller collections are stored by ‘design’, i.e. stripes, dots, etc. I do keep all of my solids together in a big, large bin (I love solids).

My scraps are sorted first by either a print or a solid. Then the larger scraps (either print or solid) are put into the appropriate bins, and the smaller prints or solids are put into their bins.

Makes it easy for me to find just the right piece I need for my scrap projects.

    Great giveaway!

In the past I haven’t been much of a stasher. I know, crazy right? I use to just buy whatever I needed to make a particular pattern. Now I’ve started buying fabric just because I like it and want to have it in my stash! I’m a stasher now – not an organized one though.

Let me put it this way. When the recent earthquake hit the east coast, my first thought was, darn, what pile of boxes has fallen over now? Seriously. My stash is a delightfully diverse collection of many, many different types of art supplies, including many boxes of cloth, tucked into every corner of the house. It awaits both better organization and channeling into satisfying finished projects. I need inspiration and directions.

I love the surprises of scrap quilting. I have an assortment of larger (one half to one yard) fabric pieces, chosen mostly because the fabric resonated with me in some way. I also have several small containers of scraps, ranging from fat eighth size to 1 by 4 inch pieces. And yes, I used those little pieces to make borders on 2 quilts.

I store my stash based on genre…Civil War, 1930′s, novelty, Christmas, etc.

I buy per project, so I don’t have a “stash”. I do have a large “Tub ‘O Scraps” however. Right now it’s overflowing the top by a good 15″- it’s a mound of strips, leftover cut shapes, leftover little chunks and so on. Last year I made a lap quilt with a $3 scrap bag from a local store and leftovers from The Tub. I guess you could call it a Leftovers Stash.

I’m a large stash quilter but when it comes to scraps I’m completely unorganized. Then I go on a scrap quilt binge. Whatever gets pulled out of the box is what gets used. You can see several on my web site. Thanks for offering the book. It looks to be one worth getting.

I recently purchased similar wire baskets from IKEA. I love how the baskets have helped me to organize my stash in my craft closet. I can finally see what I’ve got :-) Thanks for the book giveaway. It looks awesome!

I like to think I am a organized stasher but my scraps quickly get away from me. It seems like no matter how many projects I use them on they never decrease!

I thought I had only a little stash until I recently pulled everything out to reorganize it. I have caught the bug and cannot resist buying a piece or two of fabric whenever I visit a quilt store, even if I went in to just buy a spool of thread.

Until last month I didn’t have a clue how much fabric I actually had! I finally organized everything into colors and stacked it on shelves. Right now I’m feeling I should never buy another piece of fabric! Although there’s always another cute design or color that I have to have. I have always stored my fabric in those huge plastic totes and I would paw through them to find something I needed. Now I can just scan the shelf and I know exactly what I have and because it’s also color graded I can find other fabrics that complement so much easier. My scraps aren’t so organized but I don’t have as much of those so they are easier to keep track of.

I am a stashaholic, I have all sizes of fabrics and even keep tiny pieces. This book with more ideas on how to use all of my stash would be a welcome tool.

I try to keep it in control but I could fill one tub with quilting fabric, one with clothing fabric, one with unfinished projects, and one with scraps..

I’m totally a messy stasher :x I have a 6ft tall cabinet from Lowe’s filled (stuffed to the gills) with yardage, a large tote with most of my flannel stash, another with fleece, 18 photoboxes filled with cut projects, the infamous large basket of ziploc’d UFOs, 2 medium totes of strings…I also have tons of books & magazines. I’m sure I can find a place for Emily’s book though ;)

I have so much fabric it has spilled into other rooms, my friends say I have my own fabric store, but to me it’s never enough. Like you when I find a fabric that is no longer of use I donate it to others for their charity work. How much fabric do I have? I lost track at over 1500 yards. I am definitely a fabricholic, I just love it and they keep coming out with more that I can’t live without.
I am a member of U-tube n I get emails from you n I also subscribe to your blog n newsletter. Hope I win, Iam always looking for ways to use up even the tiniest of fabric
