I’m so lucky to be Katie Pasquini Masopust’s Editor. It’s so inspiring working on her books!
Her new book, Inspirations in Design for the Creative Quilter: Exercises Take You From Still Life to Art Quilt is no exception.
Katie begins by explaining how to set up an all-white still life that is the starting point for the explorations in the book. The still lifes are easy to set up using every-day items that you paint white.
I was totally amazed by how many different approaches there are to using the still lifes as a starting point for a design: contour drawing, painting with shadows, repeat, and more.

I think one of my all-time favorite Katie quilts is Dancing, created using the fast blind contour drawing method. And I love how she shows the steps she used to create the quilt.

In addition to Katie’s stunning work, the book includes many student works showing how successful anyone can be by following Katie’s instructions. Be inspired!

I love to quilt and I can remember the great memories of my great grandma making hers while sewing all by hand!! Sandra
I love to doodle. I never thought of doodling in fabric. What fun.
A book to look forward to…I have her others and they are wonderful and inspirational. She’s a fun teacher.
I was thrilled with this blog! I just got home from the APWQ in Tacoma where a group of quilters had made a series of quilts based on drawings like Katie’s. Since I am in a small art quilt group, we may use this to explore uses of color (complementary, analogous, primary and secondary triads etc), value and so on. I am ready to dive into it once our guild’s quilt show is finished in October. Lots of new ideas to explore during the gray months of winter!
I’ve posted, copied, twittered and entered.
wow guess I can leave many posts…just figure they will be one after another?
I LOVE Katie’s books and her constant change in her designing. I would love to win her newest book.

I think a lot of quilters who wish to expand themselves into art quilts do not know how to get there. I know people who have some art, drawing, painting background seem to have an easier time with the transition. This book looks like a great one to achieve the transition. Some quilters are happy sewing blocks and making quilts, but there is a time when they may say I have enough blankets and I want travel a different path.
These are wonderful projects!
Thanks for the great giveaway.
Hello Katie! Took your color theory class when you were in Augusta for the Maine Quilts 2011 Show. For the first time, when I was putting fabrics together for a project where I needed light, med light and medium (beige colors), I found myself saying “what are the tones of these fabrics on the scale of one to seven?” I’d lay one next to the other and say, “This is perfect or this one is too close like a 3 & 4 what I need is a 3 and 5.” Thanks for a fantastic class Katie! I think this is just the beginning of my inspiration….
I have all of Katie’s books, can’t wait to see this one!
