It’s the first day of August which means we are in the “heat” of summer. What a perfect occasion for a Summer at the Lake Quilts giveaway! This brand new book from the sister team of Susan Maw and Sally Bell is part of The Quiltmaker’s Club series.
What I love most about this book is the stunning lakeside photography and the how all the projects evoke a feeling of summer…specifically summer when you were a kid. Long days swimming at the lake, naps under a big tree, picnics, camps…I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea.
In the book’s introduction, Susan and Sally share a wonderful story about what inspired this book. They were reflecting on a magical summer during their childhood spent at the Sawtooth Valley in the mountains of central Idaho.
Here is a preview of the book’s introduction written by Sally and Susan:
“While reminiscing about our perfect summer, we were inspired to write this book of quilts and projects reflecting the beauty of a summer day spent outside with a basket of goodies waiting to be opened. We included our Picnic Tote, our Sunflower Picnic blanket, and the Get High on Mountains backpack to carry your picnic in style up the hiking trail. After arriving at that perfect spot, spread out the blanket, don our Fun in the Sun hat, and enjoy a lazy summer day spent sharing food and laughter. No need to worry about our simple-to-make Picnic Ant pincushions ruining your picnic. They don’t bite!”
Summer will be over before we know it, but the projects in Summer at the Lake Quilts make the memories of a warm day last all year long.

Congrats to last week’s winner! Linda E. won a copy of Point, Click, Quilt! Turn Your Photos into Fabulous Fabric Art: “Looks like a great book which I’d love to have. My last photos were in Montana last month where it was incredibly green, snow still capped all the mountains, and the wildflowers at 7000 feet were incredible!”

my favorite summer memory is eating watermelon that was chilled in our spring and spitting the seeds in the yard
I still dream of being at Grandpa’s Cabin at Canada Creek Ranch. Located in Northern Michigan woods. On a crystal clear lake. Cool breezes blewing thru trees. Beautiful, gentle deer walking in the woods with you. As close to Heaven as I’ve found on Earth!
My favourite summer memory is going to vegetable shopping at the Farmer’s Market with my grandfather…
We actually spent our summers at a lake in Northern Minnesota, where the sky was blue, the water clear, and days were lazy and filled with friends. Such lovely memories.

My favorite summer memory is of staying in a cabin on a lake much like the one pictured! Beautiful!
Summer vacation from school was time to read all the books I wanted and one of my favorite memories is riding my bike to the local public library (air-conditioned!) to pick up a few more books.

My favorite summer memories involve our annual two week vacation, when I was a kid. We’d usually head across the country. What a great experience to see the USA while growing up.
I distinctly remember the day, hot in Baltimore, that my father found a used air conditioner advertised in The Sun. Back then, it probably was a very expensive $50. He went and bought it, brought it home and much to my mother’s distress, I’m sure, firmly fashioned it into the living room window. My brother and I laid on the floor in our underwear to cool off. (We were about 7 & 5 at the time.)
Growing up our family could not afford many vacations so when our dad said that we were renting a trailer and going up north to the redwoods we were thrilled. We found a shallow inlet where we could swim, but there were so many rocks in the river that walking out into the water was rough on our feet. Our dad took it upon himself to start heaving out those rocks to make his three daughters the best swimming hole in the world. By the way he got pretty sunburn and on the way home he had to sit away from the back of the seat. Our dad sure did love his daughters.
We have had a cottage on Lake Erie for more than 50 years. I love the memories of all of our relatives coming to visit and trying to find bed space for everyone.
Exactly the type of quilt I want to make! Thanks so much!

The first time we went to Door Co, WI, was full of memories. Especially a visit to Plum Loco Ranch with our 2 yr old. He loved playing with all the toys and didn’t want to leave! He was so busy that we got to relax and have fun, too.
I love the summers my sisters and I spent outside digging in the dirt making little cities for our little people. What a great time we had and how carefree life was.
As a kid I spent summers with my grandparents in Oklahoma. We would go to Grand Lake on the weekends and have friends and family over. Somedays were spent boating and swimming on the lake, others just sipping tea on the porch in the shade. One year, we took the boy cousins and we floated down the Illinois River in canoes. I have the coolest grandparents! I’m not sure they are up to river floats anymore, but the memories are fantastic!
I can’t wait to see what the other projects are in the book! Thanks for stirring up the memories!
Oh gosh, those are adorable projects! My favorite summer memories are of camping in the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area in West Virginia. All-you-can-eat wild blueberries, and gorgeous scenery to boot!
the quilt on the cover of this book is one I have had on my mind to make for years and years! :) I’d love to have a copy!!
:) Linda
So many fond childhood memories! One that stands out is spending the whole summer at the cottage, and playing in the woods with our stuffed animals.
A wonderful memory for me was a summer that my parents took me to Texas to see my best friend who had moved away. We lived in New Jersey at the time, so it was quite a trip. It was a wonderful time.
Picking strawberries and helping the men, during the haying period – I was the “koolaide” gal, at my Grandmother’s (AKA “Mémère)!
Oh!!! And sleeping in late…. I NEVER do that, but at my “Mémère”, it always happened!
Tks for the trip down memory lane!

Spending the whole day outside – the lake, the woods, friends’ houses, softball games, bike riding – coming home for supper (and no cell phones!!!)
The first day of summer vacation is always a celebration in my family. My daughter and I always planned a great Colorado hike for the day after school let out. This summer I made that hike with my 5 year old grandson, to celebrate moving on to first grade. That HAS to be the best summer memory!
Is that a Jack’s Chain quilt I see on the cover?!! One of my favorite summer memories is actually a spring memory, as it happened the first week of May in 1976. I was 8 and I rode in the Bicentennial Wagon Train for two days.
One week each summer, spent on my grandparent’s Minnesota farm are my favorite memories for a girl who grew up in suburban Detroit.
One of my favorite summer memories is staying at my grandmother’s fishing camp in Georgia, catching brim for breakfast on a cane pole, and then my grandmother cleaning/cooking them for breakfast as well as biscuits and grits. At 10 or so, this was memorable.

One of my favorite summer memories is going up north in Michigan to a place called Hardy Dam. We went every weekend every summer the entire time I was growing up. There were so many precious memories made there and I was so thrilled to be able to share this with my own children.
Concerts in the park followed by movies on a giant blow-up screen will always be my favorite part of the summer. Picnic dinners, snacks and sitting together under the stars enjoying each other and the music and entertainment. What could be better?!

playing baseball in the neighborhood streets all summer (the streets were much safer)
I loved to pick berries when we lived in Oregon. Seems like there was a different berry crop every month of summer. I miss that, living here in southern AZ. Here, my favorite summer activity is watching the monsoon storms. Just wish there were more of them!

My favorite memory of summer was being in the backyard on a late Saturday afternoon with my family and a few friends, after a long day of playing and having a hamburger that my Dad just grilled. Oh to be a child again …

Spending summers at my grandparents cottage on the lake. They were smart and bought it in the town we all lived in, so we used it ALL the time! We would spend the day with our cousins and grandmother, and our parents would all meet after work. We’d grill and water ski/tube. It was so awesome to have our family together all the time!
