Wednesday Night Live – replay!

If you missed the show last night, click here to watch the replay – we had tons o’fun!

There were two great demos, each using different image transfer methods for putting your photos into cute board books.

I used TAP to transfer my photos on to fabric, then I fused the fabric to fast2fuse to stabilize it and give it some dimension on the page. Silicone Release Paper came in handy to ensure I didn’t fuse anything to my ironing pad!

I adhered pretty batik fabric strips to striped paper with Liquitex Matte Gel Medium to decorate the pages of my Ready-to-Go! Blank Board Book – the 7″x 5″ rectangle shape.

Cynthia Gagen was our guest demonstrator, coming to us live from Canada. Cyn demoed some fun surface design techniques to paint distressed backgrounds. She used a wet transfer technique with the matte gel medium to transfer her photo directly on to the page of her Ready-to-Go! Blank Board Book - the bone shape.

Join us next week for more fun with the blank board products – I will be working with the indie file box and our guest demonstrator, Andrea Currie, will be making something wonderful with the petal pots!

Our warehouse – always on the move!

After all the excitement of starting a new book—working though all the projects with an author, getting the instructions and design just right, figuring out how and where to promote and sell it—I bet you think the job of “publishing” is all done right there.

Not so fast! Come rain or shine, in very hot weather or extreme cold, our warehouse crew is the key element for finally getting the books and other products C&T makes into the hands of quilters, sewers, and artisans.

We’ve had some VERY cold and wet days recently, but you can see that Vien and Rodel are bundled up and packing boxes of books on to pallets for shipping.

Arnold is bringing a case of new books to fill the New Release shipments.

John is at the wheel of the forklift, stacking boxes in the correct locations so orders can be processed quickly and accurately.

Andy, our Fulfillment Manager, splits his time outside in the warehouse and inside at his desk near the Sales area, so he hears what the shops, distributors and individual quilters are calling us to order.

These men are our unsung heroes. If they weren’t out there lifting, packing, labeling and stacking, none of you would get these terrific titles we’ve all been working on for months or even years. This year alone these guys shipped out over 16,000 orders!

Thanks, WHDs!!  (“warehouse dudes” as we affectionately refer to them)

Revisiting a Traditional Best Seller

Tradition with a twistMy quilter sister in Colorado Springs, Paula, loves and excels at precision piecing. She is prolific in her quiltmaking, and since I have a Nolting longarm machine, she sends most of her quilt tops to me to be quilted. One of her favorites is the Blooming Nine Patch in Blanche Young & Dalene Young Stone’s Tradition with a Twist. She’s made half a dozen of this pattern, mostly in queen or king size. Here’s a beauty she made for her guest room. Tradition with a twist project And this year, as a surprise Christmas present for our other sister (the non-quilter) Betsy, and her husband, Chuck, Paula pieced and I quilted this 110” square Blooming Nine Patch, a stunning variation on Boston Commons. Tradition with a Twist is a 1996 publication that just keeps on selling. The variations on Sunshine and Shadows or Trip Around the World turns them into very contemporary tops that knock your socks off!

Everyday Inspiration

A creative life is filled with challenges and rewards, puzzles and curiosities. This ongoing series of poems attempts to express the “Aha”s and “What if”s, the deep ponderings and casual observations of an inquiring mind trying to make sense of reality. May it serve, for you, as a bit of “Everyday Inspiration” along your own creative path.

The hum

Of a refrigerator

After it has been

Sitting vacant

For two weeks,

Waiting for

Parts,

Is a beautiful

Thing!

I shared how to decorate the cover of an 8″ square Ready-to-Go!® Blank Board Book with all these wonderful layers, all adhered using Liquitex® Matte Gel Medium. This project is inspired by techniques in Rebekah Meier’s book, Fabric Art Collage.

The first layer of this cover is a sheet of heavily textured art paper, then a sheet of 70gm Lutradur® that I distressed around the edges with a heat gun.

Then I adhered some silver metallic foil paper, and on the very top is a square of Timtex® Interfacing, painted with Liquitex blue and yellow acrylic inks that I blended into spray  mists.

I outlined the masked-out scroll design with a marker and painted inside it with more yellow ink mixed with Liquitex Iridescent Medium to make it pop!

Phew….I count a total of EIGHT of our products that went into making this piece! I think that’s my personal best, LOL.

Quick and easy thank-you cards

After the holidays, I like to send thank-you notes for the Christmas gifts I have received.  I am a bit old-fashioned…believing that a card in the mail is the best way to express appreciation for a thoughtful gift.  Since I am a motivated crafter, I wanted to make my own cards. I used a pack of Carol Doak’s Keepsake Frame Cards for the first time and they are beautiful.  The cards and envelopes feel glorious because they are handmade paper and the texture is soft and rich.

To make the centerpiece, I used  a 3″x 5″ piece of wool felt for the background with about 8″ of variegated wool yarn for the tree to whip up a set of four cards.  I squiggled the yarn around until it looked like a tree and then used my Clover needlefelting tool to attach it to the background.  Each card took about two minutes to make.  Quick, easy and in the mail!

Feels good
