TAP techniques from the Creative Troupe

Boys in Wonderland by Deb Rowden

Print, trim, iron, done! Those are the basic steps for using Lesley Riley’s TAP™ Transfer Artist Paper. But look what happens when you take it a step further…

Our Creative Troupe constantly blows us away with ingenious and imaginative answers to our challenges. Our latest request was to create with TAP. Perhaps the following array of samples will inspire you to find different ways to use TAP in your projects.

Boys in Wonderland, the art quilt above, was made by Deb Rowden. She used TAP to transfer her image on to organza, then layered it on top of white muslin. Her borders are pieced and quilted from men’s vintage ties, which “tie in” perfectly with the old photo.

Ann Butler came up with a unique look in her ATCs, Fairy and Lilies, by transfering TAPped images on to polymer clay. The vintage effect is enhanced by the weighted feel of these ATCs when held in your hand. Continue Reading…

Alethea Ballard: The Accidental Artist

Hello blog readers!

My name is Alethea Ballard and I am excited to be a part of the C&T team. My fun pattern pack, Dream Chair Quilts, is just now hitting the shelves—I hope you’ll join me in my maverick style of sewing and whip up some amazing chair quilts.

So back in October 2009, I was in front of 1,200 middle school students, sweating under the blazing California sun, wearing a giant cowbell costume that made me look like a demented Dalmatian in a can.  But this past October found me jetting along lush Virginia backroads in a luxury car, watching the splendid east coast colors fall, on my way to my very first gallery exhibition.  How did I get from a cowbell costume to an art gallery? The answer is chairs.

Chairs: A Conversation was an art exhibit featuring my father Robert Ballard’s paintings together with my art quilts, held in the gallery of his shop, R.H. Ballard Art, Rug and Home.  The visual conversation between us is chairs:  Dad’s distinctive paintings, rich with texture and color, are balanced and serene, and my quilts are exuberant, bright and cheerful.

Here’s the 411…last summer I wanted to make my dad a quilt for his birthday.   He had been doing a series of paintings of chairs and I thought that a chair would be a great image for a quilt.  I designed and quilted a blue armchair using some of Jane Sassaman’s thistle fabric…it was fabulous!  But I didn’t want to give it away.  So then I made another and another, but none were quite right for Dad.

In the meantime, I was teaching at a public school and working on my book, Maverick Quilts (coming in June). During my book development, the pattern pack for Dream Chair Quilts was conceived. So between January and June of this year, I finished a book, designed a pattern pack, taught 165 teenagers each day and made 30 quilts.  Whew! Continue Reading…

Crazy for Judith’s iPhone App

Over a year ago we started creating iPhone apps.  We experienced a huge learning curve with the first one,  and the curve was even steeper with the second one.  The first app was pretty straight-forward though; we converted the Quick & Easy Block Tool.  The second was creating three full-feature apps at a great price, all presented within a free intro package, with loads of how-to video clips, step-by-step illustrations of over 15o stitches and stitch combinations, instructions for both right-handers and left-handers…sounds easy, right?

After many hours (and lots of failures and successes), we have the MOST amazing series of embroidery apps to share with quilters, fiber artists and needle artists.  The Embroidery Stitch Tool, by Judith Baker Montano, has everything a stitcher could want and more.

Judith shares many of her expert tips and techniques in this app with video clips from her DVD.  This tip called “Threading Up” is my favorite.  It shows you the easiest way to thread silk ribbon on to a needle.

Judith also gives you terrific color lessons and you get to see all her yummy threads and fibers.  Her embroidery instructions make it easy for even a novice stitcher like me.  So don’t delay—get yourself the FREE introductory app today and just try it! It won’t be long before you’re feeling confident, inspired, and ready to dive into all three of the full-feature apps!

Holiday gift wrap using the fast2fuse craft pack

fast2fuse® Craft Pack 14" x 18"fast2fuse® HEAVYWEIGHT Craft Pack 14" x 18"

The challenge: To decorate some holiday gift packages using only fast2fuse® craft packs, some brown paper wrapping, and what was on hand in my studio.

Being someone who is known for my over-the-top gift wrapping, I was a little worried. I like tailoring my gift wrap to the person receiving the package—finding just the right ribbon, the perfect paper (sometimes even painting my own), or tying on a special accessory. Would I still be able to do that with just what I had on hand? For the sake of stretching my creativity and being green, I said I would give it a try.

SO armed with a craft pack of fast2fuse, C&T Publishing’s double-sided fusible stiff interfacing, I headed off to my studio. The best way for me to get started on a new project is to start cleaning up from previous creation. It seems that returning objects to their home and unearthing others gets my mind moving in the right direction. By the time I found the top of my desk, I knew what I needed to do…..just keep it simple!

fast2fuse holiday gift wrap

I started off by making a sort of belt. Using pieces of fabric from my stash, I covered lengths of fast2fuse with fabric and added a ziz zag stitch around all the edges. At first I thought I was going to add a couple D rings to close the belt, but I didn’t have the right size and since I couldn’t buy anything, I had to keep looking. That’s when I came across my cache of vintage buckles….perfect! Using a buckle allows the fast2fuse bands to fit multiple size boxes and makes the bands reusable! I also used a metallic thread for my decorative edge stitching which jazzed things up a bit.

Then I wondered what else I could use for a closure. I made a fabric pin out of a coordinating fabric and my die cut machine (though scissors would work). This allowed me to simply pin (straight from the pin cushion) the fabric belt around the package and cover the pin with the, well um…fancier Reindeer pin!

To make the “belts” fit around larger packages, I cut several strips from the craft pack, which is a 14″ x 18″ cut of fast2fuse, covered them with fabric and stitched around all the edges. Then I overlapped the ends about 1/4 inch (more or less) of two pieces sewing them together with a straight stitch. I thought later it would be fun to use various pieces of fabric for a homespun, scrap look, overlap several belts, weave a number of similar colored belts together, use 3 or more belts on package offsetting the placement of the buckles…Oh the possibilities…..

Out of one fast2fuse craft pack (heavy- or lightweight) you can make two or three large, three medium and about seven small package belts. These are just approximate as it all depends on your box size and the belt width you cut. After the first gifts were wrapped, I was on a roll and I started looking around the studio to see what else I could use to connect the ribbon “belt” together on the box…..here is a collection of things I found….

This challenge really got me thinking of different ways and different things to use to wrap a package. It also got me thinking I need to better label the drawers in my studio! I suppose I even could have embellished the brown paper too….maybe used some of our Liquitex® acrylic soft body paints to give the  paper a little highlight by dry-brushing some gold or silver paint across the package. But that’s a tip for another blog post!

Vote for art in our schools!

The NAMTA Foundation is in the running to get a $250,000 grant from Pepsi!

More than $20 million will be awarded to various organizations to fund “great ideas that refresh the world” through the Pepsi Refresh Project….and the grant applicants are relying on the public to vote for their favorites.

The NAMTA Foundation’s idea is to provide grants to teachers to bring art to life in their classrooms. If this project gets enough votes to receive the Pepsi grant, the Foundation will use the money to provide grants to schools to provide teachers with the art supplies and knowledge necessary to teach art to students.

Voting runs through the end of December…please vote! You can vote up to three times a day, one time with each of these easy methods:

  1. Visit NAMTA’s page on the Pepsi site and click on the “Vote for this idea” button. You will be asked to set up a Pepsi profile with just your name and email address.
  2. Log out of NAMTA’s page on the Pepsi site and then go back in – and click on the “Vote for this idea” button again…this time choose to log in with your Facebook account instead.
  3. Text the number 104735 to Pepsi (73774).

In April, we will be featuring all of our books and products for surface design at NAMTA’s annual trade show in in booth #820.

As an active member of NAMTA, we are happy to support their foundation’s charitable efforts, and we hope you will, too!
