I met Lois Jarvis at Spring Quilt Market a few months ago and she told me how she likes dyeing things with rust. I was intrigued, as I had never heard of rust dyeing before and she invited me to visit her website that’s dedicated to surface design and dyeing with rust and promised I could learn all about it there. Later she sent me this rust image transfer technique project to share with all of you and I have to say I can’t wait to try this technique!
So whenever I’m walking my dog around our neighborhood, I’m keeping my eyes peeled for abandoned rusty objects. If you get past the fact that you are walking around in public with a very obvious piece of junk, I think the jewel of rust-dyed fabric may be in store for you!

Supplies
- Rusty item with interesting image
- Salt
- Water in spray bottle
- Piece of cotton cloth
Procedure
Select an item that has a good buildup of iron oxide on it. Study the photo below to help you get an idea of what you should be looking for. These items have interesting images to transfer to fabric, but only the corn-stick muffin pan has enough naturally occurring iron oxide built up on it to make a successful transfer.
The picture below shows the iron trivet I am going to use in this demonstration to make an image transfer. You can see it has much more iron oxide built up on it than it did when the upper photo was taken. The more orange you see, the stronger the image transfer will be.
Cover the item with the piece of cloth.
Wet the piece of cloth by spraying water on it. The rust has to actually touch the cloth to make the image transfer. The water weights the cloth down so it will touch the rust item you have selected. If your item has a good buildup of rust and you pour water onto the cloth, your image will start to transfer. Note that if you are not happy with the placement and wish to move the cloth, you might end up with a shadow transfer.
You can see from the results below that the image you transfer will not be an exact print but rather an impression of the original object. Sprinkle salt on the wet cloth. Spray water over the salt to start it dissolving. I am home all day and can keep my pieces hydrated. If you have to go to work you can put them in a plastic bag. Don’t wrap the bag tightly around you rust dyeing. Rust, salt and water need oxygen to make their chemical reactions.
Here is what the cloth still on the trivet looked like when I decided it was done. Rust dyeing is based on heat. It was hot and humid the day I did this. It took 24 hours. You can decide it is done sooner if you just can’t wait any longer to see your image.

The first time you transfer an image from any rusty item be prepared to be disappointed. Iron objects often acquire an adherent, stable rust layer from past exposure to high levels of moisture that slows down the corrosion of the underlying metal. Please do not let that initial disappointment discourage you. The next one will be a stronger image, and the next one even stronger. Soon you will have that particular rusty item work for you and you will be thinking up ways to combine it with other images to create wonderful unique designs on fabrics.
POST PRODUCTION NOTES
Line-dry each piece of fabric and save them up until there is enough to run a small load in the washing machine. Wash the dyed fabric in a washing machine with a capful of Synthrapol before using it. Synthrapol is a detergent that holds excess dye molecules in suspension in the washing water so they cannot attach themselves on the white areas of your fabric.

The process is so interesting. I tried rust dying with my kit I bought at the Chicago show. My friends and I tried it last week And were delighted with our results. We are now looking for more rusty objects to continue our experiments.

Congratulations on the recognition! You know I’ve been using your techniques mostly on silk for over 4 years. Bought your book the minute I saw your website in 2006. I had done rusting before that, but you introduced me to Earl Grey who has been my friend ever since! My collection of rust objects has grown quite large, but some of my favorite pieces now are done shibori style on pipes. Rusting has changed my life!
I’ve been experimenting with Lois’ rust pigmentation process for the last couple of years since I saw her lecture in Chicago at a Mancuso Show in 2008 and exploring from there with my own updates. I now am using my own hand dyed fabrics and rusting them as well with fantastic results.
I now frequent architectural reclaimation stores and it is a goldmine of rusted objects and when I tell them what I am using them for, I always get a hefty discount. New rule — only purchase as much rusted iron as I can carry myself or I’ll run out of room.
Fellow art quilters are also gifting me with rusty items from behind their barns and I’m getting quite a large collection of old tractor, car, and truck parts. Car swap meets are turning into good hunting grounds as well.

Is this only ok on cotton or will it work on silk, too? I don’t have anything rusty, but I think I could rust up some steel wool scrubbers. Not such a pretty pattern as this example!
I’ve purchased Lois’ CD and done several of the techniques. It is fun and amazing what each piece looks like when cleaned up. I have friends who find me rusted things and bring them over.

If you want to use silk use vinegar instead of salt. Salt is used on plant fibers like cotton and linen and polyester double knit. Use vinegar on silk and rayon.

Lois, you are still going strong. You have a real rust dynasty. Are your travels bringing you to North Carolina any time soon? I’m sure we must have some lovely rust around here just waiting to be discovered and made into some kind of textile… There must be a quilt show somewhere around Charlotte that would appreciate your unique works.
I have a quilt made with some of Lois’ Rus-tex fabric. I love the way there are all kinds of images, but the main one is a full moon right in the center of the quilt. The clouds pass by the moon – real authentic looking.
