I’ve been eyeing these Rit dyes wondering if they’re easier to use than fiber reactive dyes. The samples by Linda look absolutely beautiful. I’d combine them with my own hand-dyes in a very simple quilt of framed squares to show off the gradation of beautiful dyed fabrics.

The project I would use the fabrics, dyes, and book for… is to learn how to dye my own fabric to make a nature art quilt. I’ve been wanting to make a Zebra longwing butterfly for an art quilt but am a newbie quilter. This would help as can create the exact colors needed.

  37. Posted June 15, 2010 at 12:17 pm | Permalink

Awesome giveaway! I would use the dyes for fabrics to use in a quilt, and possibly for a dress for the 8 year old step daughter – she would love the uniqueness of it!

  38. Posted June 15, 2010 at 12:18 pm | Permalink

I’ve always been interested in color theory, but since I became a quilter I’ve studied everything I can get my hands on. I love the Pantone website! I always look forward to their color of the year (for 2010 it’s Turquiose), and of course I have to have every book related to quilting and color that comes out. In fact, this dictionary is on my Amazon wish list. I’ve never used RIT dyes simply because when I was a kid tie-dyed tee shirts were the rage and of course my mom wouldn’t let me use the washer, saying the dye would stain it. That was 40 years ago, so I’m sure RIT has revamped the product, as it seems as popular as ever these days. I’ve wanted to get into dying my own fabric, but I have so many quilt related hobbies and have spent a fortune, so if I were to do so I’d do it the easy, RIT way. So of course I’d be thrilled to win this giveaway!

  39. Posted June 15, 2010 at 12:36 pm | Permalink

I would probably use the dyes to prepare fabric for some Ricky Tims convergence or rhapsody quilt project, most likely rhapsody, since I’ve already done convergence :)

  40. Posted June 15, 2010 at 12:46 pm | Permalink

I have been intrigued by convergence quilts for a while now, I would love to try them with hand dyed fabrics. ohhhhhhh the possibilities!

My 12-year-old daughter has dyed fabric with me and is starting to make quilts…this would make a great summer project for her, learning to dye her own fabrics and making her first quilt out of them (plus it might keep her out of my hair for part of the summer!).

I am really really curious about the author’s experiences with RIT. I’ve always been told (urban legend?) that they are fugative on all fabrics since they try to dye both protein and cellulose fibers… so I’d love to compare the outcome with my fiber reactive hand-dyes!

(Not the least bit of OCD in me, no, not a bit ;-)

I would send them to my friend in the UK. She is a brilliant fiber artist and doesn’t have a lot of money for supplies and I know she would be thrilled. She also has MS which makes it more challenging to do her artwork but she is a generous soul and would be so appreciative!!

I’ve had a project in mind for quite some time now, but lack the necessary resources to make it reality. I want to dye a heavier weight fabric, (twill or denim), enhance the result with machine embroidery, and use the resulting fabric for purses and jackets. I would sooo like to win one of these collections-especially the Fabric Dyer’s Dictionary, which luckily is included in both collections.

I want to make quilts for all of the kids in my family so I would use it to customize the quilts for each kid. I think it would be a blast to have them help me with it so they will learn the techniques and hopefully one day pass them on to their kids. One thing that we would do on each quilt is create a batik on which each kid uses the wax to write their name and whatever else they want to add to it and use that piece in the quilt top. I’m at the perfect point in my journey as a quilter to move into hand dyeing my own fabrics and especially batiks. This is so exciting! I signed up for the YouTube account and only wish I had learned about it earlier. What a great learning tool! Thank you.

In my previous post I said I would use wax to create batiks. Scratch that. I would use the Crafter’s Pick™ Batik-EZ Resist Medium that I just found on RIT’s website. How have I not heard of this stuff before!?!

I would love to mix and match both the bold and pastels Riz colors to make a bag to use on my Jazzy. When I have to go shopping It is hard to carry my purchases and also use the in store carts in front of my Jazzy. This would be a big help as I have to travel in the streets as there are no sidewalks here. The bold colors and pastels mix might make it easier to be seen!

  245. Posted June 28, 2010 at 2:24 pm | Permalink

I’ve just started doing my own fabric dyeing. I like mixing hand dyes with commercial batiks for unique quilts.

    WOW ! What a wonderful giveaway !
I would make an applique quilt plus
it’s been years since I dyed my own fabric
( at Haystack ) I think I’d like to try some
    new techniques !

My plan would be to buy lots of cream homespun and experiment with resist dyeing with the Bolds & Brights pack, using the book as a reference for making a wonderful spectrum of original fabric. I’d then incorporate my experimental cloth with the fat quarters and make a super-colourful quilt of alternating plain and pieced blocks.
Hmmm, I might just try that even if I don’t win. :)

I love Ritz Dyes and have used them for over 50 years starting as a young girl dying T-shirts, skirts and presently I am learning to dye lace, silk ribbon and silk fabrics. I also plan to use them on children’s plain T-shirts, onesies for infants and hats/bonets for very young children. I also plan to use them for high school/college school in their school colors for clothing, purses, hats, various other items that I find that are suitable for dying. Almost all of the Rit Dyes I use are not harmful to children if they should put their clothing in their mouths. I prefer the pastel dyes but with be happy with eitther colors.
