Technique Tuesday with Jane Dávila & Elin Waterston

Expand your artistic horizons by learning how to paint on fusible web. It’s a surface design technique that can be incorporated into any project you may be working on and will serve to art it up in a fun and experimental way.

Pellon Wonder-Under fusible web can be painted with fabric or acrylic paint and fused to fabric, adding layers of color and creating interesting texture or design elements on the fabric surface. Paint diluted with water will create a transparent effect, whereas full-strength paint will have a more opaque look. The results of this technique are somewhat unpredictable and will create an organic, imperfect effect.

This technique is an excerpt from Art Quilts at Play by Jane Dávila and Elin Waterston which includes 22 different techniques and creative design effects.

    I have tried this and always find it sticky… am I not using enough paint?
    I have had to cover the painted fusible so I can continue sewing, pressing, etc.
    Any help?

    @Carole –

    Sticky after it’s dry and ironed on to the fabric? It shouldn’t really be sticky, but it sometimes still has a little tackiness to the touch. You shouldn’t iron it directly. You can iron it if you cover it with parchment paper or release paper, but wait to pull that up until it’s all the way cool. I prefer not to iron it at all, so I just plan accordingly. Sewing shouldn’t be a problem, but you can cover it with parchment or tracing paper while you sew and then remove that when you’re done.

    hope that helps…
    Elin
