Funny Bunny Stuffy

While I was playing with our Liquitex acrylic paints and thinking about all the cute stuffies I’ve been seeing lately, I thought about how easy it would be to make a painted stuffy. I drew out a few ideas, picked the one I liked the most, and transferred the outline to two pieces of muslin—one for the front and one for the back of what was to become my Funny Bunny Stuffy.

I started by painting the yellow and orange striped legs, then the purple head and hands. I let those colors dry, and decided on a medium blue-green color for the body/dress and livened it up with some bronze/orange and black dots. Then black/brown for the feet. The face was easy to paint with black and white paint. I added beads for the eyes, purple embroidery floss for the hair, and a little brass-colored charm for her dress.

I cut out the two pieces, and sewed them together leaving an opening on the side for stuffing. I stuffed her with soft polyfill, and sewed up the opening.

And here she is.

Technique Tuesday with Lisa Fulmer

I admit it…I am head over heels in love with Lutradur. I use it in so much of my work…in fabric art, artist trading cards, greeting cards, scrapbook layouts, and mixed media art. I just love the fiber texture and how you can burn it and paint it. Instructions for making this ATC are at the end of this post.

You can treat it just like paper when you paint on it, but I recommend placing an absorbent sheet underneath to catch any paint that seeps in between the fibers. I usually paint on top of watercolor paper, then I get a “two-fer.” I particularly love brushing Liquitex® Acrylic inks! on Lutradur because they have a bright, fluid consistency and the fibers really show through. You can also spritz it with spray inks or draw on it with pencils, pastels, and markers.

And then there’s the burning! Using the pointed writing tip on a textile tool, you can carve any shape you want into the sheet. Be sure to work on a heat-resistant surface. With the hot air from a heat gun, you can burn interesting lacy effects like I did with this snowflake. You can fold and cut Lutradur just like paper, then burn it like chiffon fabric. It takes a little practice to control the burning – the closer you hold the gun to the sheet, the faster it just melts away. If you paint the sheet first and let it dry, then it will burn more slowly. Always work in a well-ventilated area when you are burning Lutradur! Continue Reading…

Everyday Inspiration

A creative life is filled with challenges and rewards, puzzles and curiosities. This ongoing series of poems attempts to express the “Aha”s and “What if”s, the deep ponderings and casual observations of an inquiring mind trying to make sense of reality. May it serve, for you, as a bit of “Everyday Inspiration” along your own creative path.

I step outside…
Oooo
It’s warmer outside
It’s because
There’s rain!
I hear spring—
(Birds in a nearby
Tree—
Springsong)
And the soggy
Newspaper
Is damp
On one side
Dry
On the other.
