Little Birds, an upcoming May release and the first book in our Design Collective series, showcases a select group of fresh, contemporary designers and 26 adorable, one-of-a-kind bird projects for sewers, quilters, and crafters.
One of the contributing designers is Mika Yamamura, an Etsy seller and blogger who’s handmade wares include heartfelt pillows, plushies, notecards, and other accessories and ornaments. We are very excited to have her creation Chewy the Owl (below) as a featured project in Little Birds.
As a special treat for our blog readers and Facebook community, Mika is giving you all a chance to win one of her very special felt pillow creations….Brown Stewart the Owl!
The following description of Stewart was taken from his page in Mika’s Etsy shop, Cuore:
Stewart the Owl likes to sit in his tree and ponder life with his squirrel neighbors. He lives in San Francisco, near a beautiful wood paneled tree house. He is a big fan of Conan O’Brien, and is pondering a move to Los Angeles in the summer, when Conan will be taking over the Tonight Show. In his spare time, Stewart teaches the neighborhood owl and squirrel kids how to break dance to hip hop.
Stewart’s body is made from wool felt in a chocolate brown, his eyes are white felt with brown vinyl lashes. The front panel of his body is sage green wool felt with 2 rows of white jumbo ric rac trim. His beak is made from a textured peanut brittle colored vinyl.
Stewart measures 15″ across at his widest point, and 14″ from the tip of his ear to the bottom of his body.
The pillow stuffing is eco- fill,a sustainable/recycled fill, which gives him a super soft feeling!
Stewart loves to perch on couches, chairs, and beds!

After receiving my degree in design from the Fashion Institute in Los Angeles, I honed my creative skills at Paul Frank Industries for 6 1/2 years as the Women’s Accessories designer where I learned how to make everything from bags and wallets to guitar straps.
I started “Cuore” (heart in Italian) in 2006, and was honored to be named a finalist in Fred Flare’s “Next Big Thing 2007″ !

I love Stewart the Owl! This is hard! All the creations are adorable with a simplistic style – very cute. So, my pick, though it was hard, is the Stewart the Owl Heart card! I am a card maker & scrapbooker and owls are hot on the scene – and I’ve collected many owl embellishments for my crafting. Just purchased a cartridge for my Cricut Expression because it had an owl! Oh, and I have owl stamps, and owl embellishments, too. In elementary school, I made up a story and made a “book” for a project and it was about an owl! So, even though I have a pug (Starsky), and almost wanted to select the pug card, I am loving the Stewart the Owl Heart Card! And the Stewart the Owl Felt Pillow will be placed in my scrapbook room, helping me make “wise” descisions in all my crafting!
