C&T Holiday Camp 2009: Stash-busting Placemats Class

My placemat, the class sample

What do you get when you combine editors, sales people and managers, along with fabric scraps and fast2fuse or batting, and then give them access to the conference room for a couple of hours? You get C&T Holiday Camps….opportunities for us to share our love of MAKING THINGS with each other.

A few times a year, we take time to investigate projects and techniques in current, upcoming or old books, or new artistic endeavors we’ve been trying to cultivate and we teach each other what we’ve found to be the most effective or maybe just the most fun.

The first holiday camp class this year was a placemat class taught by me! I have a quick and easy method of using scrap strips and fast2fuse® or batting to make placemats and table runners, with some amazing results.

Sales Manager, Sandy Balin, had never sewn before, but she plunged right in and made a long 14” x 62” table runner, surprising her sons (who were as interested in the old Featherweight she brought home to complete her project as they were astounded to see their mother sewing) and husband.

The finished project!

Adrianne used Batiks for her placemats and they came out beautifully…

Danielle went a slightly different route, and instead of using strips from an array of fabrics, she used the same fabric for most of her strips then mixed things up with a different fabric as a detail.

All in all, the class was a success!

What fun. And Fast2Fuse would be perfect for this quickie project. Gee, I think there is still time to make these for gifts. And I definitely have plenty of fabric in my stash! Inspirational.

Hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas!

What a fun project! Nice to see you “in print.” You are so gifted in the way you combine fabrics for that scrappy look. Best wishes for a great 2010! M.

This project is fun for any season! I love the place mats I made with Ruthmary in our mini-group. (I even sewed a bunch together to make an instant table topper!)
Ruthmary is always inspiring – from the very first “Confetti Quilt” she taught us to the latest “little bird ornament”
Thanks C&T for showcasing one of my favorite quilting buddies!

I LOVED this class and I LOVE the placemats I made! I am just finishing the binding on the last one right now. I am giving them to my sis for X-mas. She just moved in with her boyfriend and they don’t have a dining table yet but she swears she is getting one soon! Hope so! Thanks Ruthmary!

What a great way to use (oops, almost said “get rid of”) those scraps I’ve had forever. I’m thinking of a way to adapt this for my sister’s round table . . .
C&T holiday camp is a GREAT idea.
