Fearless Design: Even for Me!

I was looking through some of our recent releases and my eyes fell upon Fearless Design for Every Quilter by Lorraine Torrence and Jean B. Mills. Every quilter, hmm, I’m a quilter. . . .  So I picked the book up and began reading it.

Unlike some project books, where I just go to the project I want to make, this one bears reading from cover to cover. It takes the reader through 10 lessons that relate to design. There are 5 lessons on design principles and elements, such as balance, asymmetrical composition, and color. Then there are 5 more lessons on design sources and inspiration, things like words, images, and pattern. Each lesson starts with a discussion of the principle or element, then there is an assignment for the reader. These assignments range from interpreting a motif in 4 different ways to designing fabric to using nouns and verbs to spur your creativity. Very interesting and approachable stuff.

Next in each lesson is a critique session where we see how each of 4 students completed their assignments. We get to hear the critiques they were offered – both positive and constructive. There’s plenty of suggested reading, too, referring the reader to other books that delve further into each creative area. You can pick what interests or challenges you most, and they tell you how to further your growth in that area.

This is a well-written and thoughtful book, with doable exercises. Maybe my design sense will increase just by reading it and maybe, just maybe, I’ll do the exercises and really get moving.

So many of the C&T blog pictures have not opened recently, why? Today the first pic did not open, I gather it is the book cover. The quilt sample did open, love the clean lines and red. When the pics do not open, the written word does not hold my interest in the same way… and on to the next blog.

Hi Bev, I wish that were the case! If this doesn’t get fixed soon I’ll have to start describing what the covers look like in the posts! lol
