Fabric dyeing at Dharma Trading, that is. I recently taught a dyeing class at Dharma Trading, one of the primary sources of Procion fiber-reactive dyes. The folks at Dharma put together a kit that included dyes, soda ash, a dust mask, gloves, and a copy of my book Fast, Fun & Easy® Fabric Dyeing.

Teaching from a book makes teaching so easy—no handouts to prepare, everyone has all the information they both in class and when the go home to work on their own.

The class was a 3-hour Introduction to Creative Fabric Dyeing the Fast, Fun & Easy Way. Everyone had a chance to try out some things. The only problem with a 3-hour class is that I don’t get to see any finished fabrics–I hope they send me emails so I can see their results.

I'm thinking of dyeing my own fabrics but I was going to use plants and foods. I have asthma and I'm concerned about using anything else for dyeing. What can you tell me about any of the dyes you recommend? Do they have websites?
so, what kind of fabric do you dye? do they sell just white fabric? i'm sure they do :) this sounds and look so interesting and fun. do you think they have a section about printing on fabric like….potatoe or leaf printing?
You can get information on the Procion MX dyes at http://www.dharmatrading.com – look for the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets). The dyes are a fine powder, but everyone should wear a good dust mask when using them. After the powder is mixed with water, it usually isn't a problem. Do be aware that to fix natural dyes, i.e. make them permanent, you may have to use some chemicals. I dye cotton, linen, rayon, silk, and wool. Dharma Trading sells all types of white/natural fabric, yarn, and blanks – clothing and other items that you can dye.
Are you going to do the class again? I didn’t get the email about it till two days before and already had other plans. I would love to take this class!!
Yes, on September 26th – give them a call to get details.
I am interested in fabric dyeing classes in the Marin area. please email me. Thanks. Roberta
