I love stumpwork and incorporate a modern version, with my designs, it into my work. You can find it on my blog http://wagonwifedesigns.blogspot.com. Please check the slide show for 2 totes. One of the ocean, the mermaid and turtle were done in stumpwork. The second is African, the lion and elephant are done in stumpwork. Also check the sidebar projects under dimensional embroidery and crazy quilting. My designs of flowers and dragonflies are there. Also how I created them. I hope you enjoy your books, many are out of print. I hope you will share what you create.

Stumpwork is one of my favourite techniques! And Jane Nicholas truely is the Obi-wan of all things stumpworked - especially her amazingly beautiful beetles and dragonflies.

I did a few pieces recently which are more modern in design than most that's out there. They're up on my website, or in my flickr feed if you'd like to take a squiz: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aliented/sets/72157615673744759/

Yes, this is being done today. Much of it on Crazy Quilts. Jane Nicholas from Australia is the worlds formost authority on this type of needlework. This is her web page. http://www.janenicholas.com/index.php She has many great books and is a great Teacher. I took some classes from her several years ago. There are some stitch groups online too at Yahoo Groups and Stitching Fingers.
