Almost everyone I know is having babies (including myself)….I don’t know what’s in the water, but be careful reading this or you may be next!
In my last post I committed to creating one sewing project a week. I have a long list of things that I’d like to make but it made the most sense to get going on baby gifts for all of my friends (after all, there are 4 of them having babies!).
When I was pregnant with my first daughter, one of our awesome Production Coordinators, Zinnia, gave me some lovely quilted baby bibs that my now-almost-two-year old still uses. I love these bibs. They are soft, sturdy, suuuuper-cute, and best of all, we can just throw them in the laundry and reuse them…I much prefer them over the hard, plasticky bibs out there. I wanted to buy them for all of my friends, but the woman who made mine is taking a little break from her business, so I had to take matters into my own hands!

For Beth's baby boy: The little polka-dot bib is for a new little eater and the more sophisticated plaid is for an older toddler.
I have to admit that I did not use a pattern or instructions for these; I just eye-balled it (and tapped into the minds of the C&T Quilt-Making Goddesses that surround me). I’m sure you all will have a better way to do this, but I can tell you what I did (p.s. I would love any suggestions that you might have):
- I cut two fun fabrics (these are double-sided) and a piece of thin batting about 1-1/2″ larger than the bib size. I ironed and placed the fabrics right-sides together with the batting on the bottom of the stack.
- I traced the shape of the bibs that I love so much onto the top fabric, this way I got the neck opening at the correct size.
- I pinned the stack in place and then stitched around the perimeter about a 1/4″ from the edge. I was sure to leave a 2-3″ opening so that I could turn the bib right-side out.
- After pulling the bib out, I quilted a simple design over the top. I learned from the C&T Quilt-Making Goddesses that it was better to quilt first, then stitch around the edge because then my fabric and batting wouldn’t bunch…thanks ladies!
- I stitched around the perimeter and was sure to close up the opening that I made earlier.
- I slapped on some circle velcro tabs and was good to go! (okay, I stitched, not “slapped” the velcro on and I used velcro because I was too lazy to do buttons…I also thought new mommies would prefer the safety of velcro over buttons)
When coupled with some black & white crib cards and a bottle of organic baby bubble bath, I think these bibs make a really nice gift ….a gift I wouldn’t mind receiving anyway.
So I’ve got Beth done, now on to Molly, Kelly, and Christina!

Here are some girlie bibs that are in the works

these are soooo cute!! great job!!
I have made quilted bibs by layering backing, batting, and top fabric as in a quilt (a square or rectangle of each slight larger than desired bib). Go ahead and quilt the fabric sandwich in desired pattern. Then cut out bib shape and using pinking shears around the edge! No need to turn project “right side” out.
Perfect timing finding this as I am just getting ready to makes bids…thanks so much for the great tips-your bids turned out so cute.
I loved the looks of these simple bibs. Who wouldn’t want a hand-made bib!!
