Weekly Giveaway: Big One-Star Quilts by Magic

10577“WARNING: The Diamond-Free methods in this book are addictive!” So goes the first line of Nancy Johnson-Srebro’s Introduction to Big One-Star Quilts by Magic. Johnson-Srebro’s Diamond-Free method was first introduced in Stars by Magic, but her fans and converts weren’t satisfied for long. Almost immediately, Nancy was inundated with requests for instructions on how to use the method for even larger stars, which is exactly what she delivers in Big One-Star Quilts by Magic: 14 different stars in 4 different sizes; 14 patterns for incredible bonus wallhangings using the cut-offs; 28 quilting designs; 4 Quilt Maps, for easy quilt assembly; and 4 ways to make bonus backings. And all from squares and rectangles! Wow.

I feel compelled to mention that it may not be just the Diamond-Free methods taught in this book that are addictive. I’m highly suspicious of the addictive nature of the images alone. The blocks in this book are absolutely captivating and I am already planning my evening around trying my own skills on one of these dreamy stars. Consider yourselves warned!

For a chance to win a copy of Big One-Star Quilts by Magic, post a comment here before Monday, June 15, 2009 telling us about one of your creative addictions- it can be anything from collecting buttons and beads to cranking out stockings for your family (and everyone else’s) around the holidays. We’ll randomly pick one winner to be announced on Monday.  Good Luck!

You mean quilting isn’t enough of an addiction? To everyone outside the quilting world, that would be enough. I’m addicted to fabric, especially all these pre-cut bundles out there right now. I can’t get enough of all the charm packs, jelly rolls, fat quarter bundles, etc. I love ‘em.

Right now, while my studio is incomplete and my sewing machine and supplies are stored (I know, boohoo) my addictions are being fed by acquiring more fabric.

  7. Posted June 11, 2009 at 2:23 pm | Permalink

Like most quilters, one of my addictions is buying fabric, and usually without knowing exactly what I will use it for. This feeds my greater addiction, which is trying every new quilting technique I come across, at least once. You can see the results of my addiction at my Etsy quilt shop.

Like Jen, I feel that quilting itself is addiction enough !!!
I am having too much fun with all the jelly rolls, charm packs out now etc for quick & easy projects. Best of all, my college-aged daughter and niece both appear to be well-infected with the quilting virus – thanks to pre-cuts & a little help from me. They are so appealing to new and younger quilters (and “old” ones too HA)

I guess my biggest addiction is fabric. I must have it. I think I like to refer to it as my fabric collection. Along with fabric I also collect ribbons, lace, buttons…really anything that can be sewn into a wall hanging, quilt or one of my favorite pastimes, cloth dolls. I keep journals of all my creations and swatches of all the fabrics used to create them.

I’m addicted to collecting quilts since my multple scclerosis makes it very hard for me to complete a quilt. Still my love from baby quilts to king size has not gone away. I’m still trying to work on one for my new grandaughter on my good days. The way it is going I think it will be complete for one of her babies. But I’m not giving up. The star pattern is the one I’m addicted to the most, I believe it’s because that is the pattern my Granny who created beautiful quilts, made for my third daughter. I’m hoping at least one of my three daughters will be stung by the quilting bee.

I have to say my addiction would be that every thanksgiving and Christmas for about 16 years now, I am the host. And in the mist of all the hussel and bussel of the season I do not set my table without homemade name placements. They are always machine or hand stitched and always with fabric and for me the exciting part is to try and figure out what to do for that year, Oh and on thanksgiving I make my table cloth and have everyone who attends that year sign it. Now I cannot say that I have all the table cloths because my brother is single so he gets to pick which ones he wants depending on who he brought to dinner that year but I have the rest. Thanks for the chance to win the giveaway.

I love star quilts, but the odd angles of the diamonds scare me. This sounds like a perfect solution. I’m excited to WIN the book and to try the techniques!

My addiction is quilting magazine. I am obsessive about picking up every issue of every magazine. I travel to several stores in my town to gather magazines each month. I quit several subscriptions to quilting magazines because I couldn’t remember which magazines I was receiving at my home, and Wwen I’d see a new magazine on the stands I’d automatically purchase it … and then the magazine would come in the mail [that's a pet peeve of mine, by the way .. subscribers getting the magazine AFTER it's on the stands!!], often ending up with two magazines … sometimes I’d be FORGETFUL, and end up with more than two issues of the magazine — especially if there was something interesting on the cover. ;)

I need to be doing something, hand piecing, binding or reading about piecing or quilt designs. Even going to a quilt shop and touching the fabric works. Quilting is an addiction and therapy.

Needing an excuse to buy even more fabric…I decided to make totes and purses out of fat quarters. To embellish these, I would need broaches of all types and styles. Now instead of being addicted only to fabric, I am also going nuts collecting unusual broaches. This requires going to yard sales and rummage sales – which is also addicting. I am still buying more and more fabric to use for all purposes, but have not yet even made a tote. I’m too busy getting all of my fabric and broaches.

When I’m practicing free-motion quilting I tend to get carried away and spend way too many hours in my sewing room. I tend to get carried away when I”m on the computer designing patterns using my EQ6 program…oh, lets not forget shopping on-line for fabric! I’m also addicted to reading…and tending to my many collections…stamps, fabric, stationery, sealing wax, quilting threads, Jadite, heart boxes, etc., etc. I could go on and on!

I am addicted to the sateen yard of the month club from Judy Robertson’s Just Imagination (www.justimagination.com). I get a beautiful, hand dyed yard of sateen fabric in the mail, at the beginning of each month. I love everything about the yard of the month package – the tyvek envelope starts my creative juices flowing… what color family will the yard of fabric fall into? Is it like something I have already purchased? What will it inspire in me? The mystery of each piece makes me smile and try to envision actually using the beautiful fabric that feels so good in my hand. I have been a member of the YOM since Judy started with the sateen fabric. This has to be my favorite addiction. The hardest part of this type of fabric is to get over the fear that I will use up theyard and there will be a “better” project that the piece could be used in the future. Anyhow, I think everyone should have some of Judy’s amazing fabric :)

    Cheers,

My addiction is sitting at one of my looms cranking out fabric. The physical, rhythmic, repeating motion is truly addictive. I love watching the fabric grow under my hands. My second choice is pushing fabric thru a sewing machine. As much as I love the fabric selection and designing process it seems to be the physical ‘doing’ that I crave. And I get really crabby when I’m forced to go without.
