My Soothing Neutral Quilt

Most of the quilts I make are pretty colorful. Even the more muted ones usually have lots of patterned fabrics in them.  So I decided my eyes needed a break and made a neutral quilt.

When I visit quilt shops as I travel, I like to make at least a small purchase.  If I don’t have a particular project in mind, I just buy a neutral….something in the white to creamy to espresso range, whether mottled or a floral or even a dinosaur print on close examination….just so it is beige.  You can imagine the stash I have!

ruthmaryquiltI used one of Gwen Marston’s liberated non-patterns for this quilt, a version of “Exquisite.” It was easy because I didn’t need any templates.  You can see the “butterflies” in the corners, or see the white “stars,” depending on where you focus your eyes.  I’d planned to give this away, but I love it so much that I’m keeping it for myself.  Now I can’t decide if it is “Latte with Whipped Cream” or “Desert Landscapes.”

If you want to make your own soothing quilt, you can find lots of ideas in Neutral Essentials with Alex Anderson.

This really is a lovely quilt, and it proves that neutrals are anything but dull!

I am changing my preconceived notion that “real” quilts are complicated and wildly colorful because of Ruthmary’s Latte. It is elegant in its’ simplicity and her choice of colors is wonderful!

This really is an “Exquisite” quilt! It would never occur to me to use “only” neutrals. I am going to have to dig into my stash and move the neutrals to a more featured location instead of burying them behind the “important” fabric. Good work Ruthmary. Now I just have to get that book.

One of my favorites that my little sister made. I’ve even used a picture of it as my desktop background. Alex Anderson’s book on neutrals has some wonderful ideas on how to use that neutral stash you have.

Great use of neutrals and complimentary block design. Rounded corners a definite plus!

I tend to like bold, bright colors. After seeing this beautiful, serene quilt I guess I have to rethink things a bit! I love the subtle shadings. And what a great title! I have to check out Alex’s book and see what I have been missing.
I’ll also have to keep checking to see what Ruthmary puts up next!

What a great idea…. little dino prints blended with whatever.

Gwen Marston is so inspiring. Thanks for sharing your quilt , and inspiring us in turn.
