Weekly Giveaway: A Touch of Felt

106091For many of us, our first tangible creations were made in grade school using felt and Elmer’s glue. What a mess that was! (And don’t get me started on those bleeping safety-scissors – ARGH!) By second grade, my grandmother had more “pot holders” than she had pots – each one more bizarre than the next. But, I had fun making them, and she loved anything I made for her. Now you can rediscover (or discover for the first time) the joy of working with felt to make beautiful, sophisticated home accessories and gifts with Lynne Farris’ new book, A Touch of Felt. Learn all the different ways to work with wool felt—hand or machine needle felting, wet felting, sewing with felt fabric, even felting with silk. Lynne includes 22 color-rich felt projects that you’ll be proud to display in your home, or give as gifts.

If you’d like to win a copy of A Touch of Felt by Lynne Farris, simply channel your inner-child and post a comment telling us about your favorite childhood creation (the goofier the better – hee!). On Monday morning, February 23, we’ll pick one comment at random and post the winner later that day.

*Note: Comments will be closed on Monday, February 23, at 9am PST.

Technical Editors @ Work

carolynandteresa
Have you ever wondered what the Technical Editors at C&T do? Here’s a perfect example of just one of the things: In this case, to make sure paper piecing templates for an upcoming book are accurate, they cut them out, made copies as needed, and taped them together to make sure everything fit just right.

As you can see, it can be a lot of work, but it’s crucial that everything fits together perfectly so that everyone who buys the book has accurate patterns to work from.

Everyday Inspiration

A creative life is filled with challenges and rewards, puzzles and curiosities. This ongoing series of poems attempts to express the “Aha’s” and “What ifs”, the deep ponderings and casual observations of an inquiring mind trying to make sense of reality. May it serve, for you, as a bit of “Everyday Inspiration” along your own creative path.

The computer
Is great.
But the rustling
Of the
Sunday morning
Paper
With a cup of
Coffee
Will never be replaced
By
The Internet.

Wearable Arf Winner

Congratulations to Jake Linfesty for winning last week’s free book giveaway

Jake is my 10 year old son who has started sewing a lot with me. He is very creative in his placement of fabric. He can amazingly use the tiniest pieces of fabric and it looks great. He writes about his three cats, he draws them constantly, he is forever making tiny little blankets and quilts so that his cats will be as comfortable as himself. This is definitely a book that has peaked his interest. – Jake’s Mom

“No Sugar Added” Cupcakes

I love seeing what clever crafters have created with our line of Ready-to-Go!® Blank Board Products.

When we passed out our new Cupcake Book to our team of designers, we were shocked at their ability to think outside the box. We got some adorable designed cupcakes, but we also had designers who didn’t see a cupcakes. They saw a fish, ice cream cone, and even a mushroom.

See more fabulous designs using our Cupcake Blank Board Book in our flickr set.

*Designs by Jane Hasty and Daniela Costa, respectively.

Started in 2007, Finished in 2007
Design basis: Original design with traditional Mariner’s Compass

This quilt was inspired by designs from marble and wooden floors. Cosmati refers to 13th century mosaic designs by a family of Italian craftsmen. I have incorporated elements of their work with my favorite stars and flying geese.

Quilters: How Are You Coping?

Are you quilting more? Or less?

Are you quilting more? Or less?

If you’re like me, you’re not willing to give up your favorite activities in life just because you have a tighter budget. I’m a ballroom dancer, and what used to be once-a-week private lessons, expensive costumes, and annual competitions has now shrunk to monthly lessons and assisting with classes in exchange for four hours of free dancing every week. I won’t give up my passion! But I’ve had to adjust…

How has the economy affected your quilting pursuits?

Do you have more time to quilt? Less time?

Do you buy patterns instead of books? Downloadable PDFs or traditional printed copies?

Are you pulling from your stash or swapping with guild members instead of buying new fabric?

Are you taking one-day classes, locally, instead of traveling to weeklong retreats?

Are you finding answers and community online instead of traveling in your car to meetings?

How are you cutting back, recycling, reusing? What is your resourcefulness?

I have been labeled a perennially upbeat person, so it’s hard for me to be down for long. To me, this economic situation is a challenging opportunity for resourcefulness. We may not be able to work at our passion in the same way as before. We may have to put more effort into figuring out solutions and finding ways to achieve our goals, but we will do it. With such a great community of quilters at hand, we can learn from each other.

So tell us, how are you coping? We’d like to know!
