We have an inner-office recycling plan, recycling everything from paper to packing materials and from bottles to bolt cores, reducing our solid waste. We are seeing a whole lot more recycling and a whole lot less trash, fer sure! On top of that, Marketing Manager Lisa Fulmer-Bruce takes in the bottle-and-can recycling herself, and donates the money received to charity.
We also utilize battery, toner, light bulb, and eWaste recycling options—even asking that employees bring in their home eWaste recyclables to ensure they don’t end up at the dump. So employees with burned out CFLs can bring them in for recycling… however, if the stories are true, we shouldn’t expect a rush on recycling CFLs for another 6 years or so.
Did you know that all 7200+ RadioShack locations accept rechargeable batteries for recycling? How cool and convenient is that?! Many office-supply stores will let you recycle toner cartridges—many of them will even additionally give you a discount on your new toner cartridge!
There is also the ecoNEW program, available at Office Depot, Sam’s Club, and (for those in the Navy) at the Navy Exchange (NEX). This program allows you to turn in old tech toys—like laptops, mp3 players, digital cameras and camcorders—and get a store gift card for the value of your item. Plus, you can dump your old eWaste—like monitors, printers, small home electronics—to recycle.
Technology is helpful in many places…but not in a landfill.
